What is the process and timeline for renewing a US passport at the embassy in Thailand, and can I travel while waiting for it?

Hi Thailand Friends - I’m new here and hoping someone can help. I‘m an American traveling on USA passport. I just realized I’m dangerously low on blank passport pages (down to 3) and have travel plans in the next 6 months that will fill those pages completely.

I know that I need to apply for a passport renewal and that I can do this at Bangkok USA Embassy, but my question is about timeline (how long it takes) steps to the process, can I still travel while I’m waiting, etc.

I’ve reached out via email and phone to Embassy trying to find the specifics and have had zero luck. Thinking someone here might’ve been through this and can help?

Thank you 🙏🏽🇹🇭🇺🇸❤️

TLDR : Answer Summary
An American expat in Thailand is seeking advice on renewing their US passport due to a low number of blank pages. They have questions regarding the application process at the Bangkok embassy, how long it takes, and if they can travel during the waiting period. Community responses indicate the renewal process can take 2-8 weeks, is conducted via mail, and usually requires the applicant to remain in Thailand until the new passport arrives. An emergency passport can be issued more quickly if necessary.

The regular 10 year passport take about 2 weeks to arrive. And i recommend the EMS option (where you must buy the Envelope at the on-embassy Post Office and fill out an address)

You can request an emergency passport at the same time as you apply for regular one. They can issue that one within 24 hours, and is good for 1 year.

@Jon *****
thanks Jon, is the EMS option something you do in person versus filling out the form and mailing it in? Did you make an appointment? What was your grounds for getting them to issue an emergency passport? Is “because you have my passport right now” a good enough reason? I could only see lost or stolen passport as a way to get an emergency passport.

[cont] -> us embassies for most services, you must make appointment through the appointment channel on embassy website. If they dont have anything available soon, you can make initial appointment. Then forward that appointment email to them and politely request earlier date. Say that you are traveling imminently.

If they dont respond to that email within 24 business hours, call the contact number for the bangkok embassy and follow up there.

The us embassy security checkpoint has a list of who has appointment that day. Only those people and their approved guests will be allowed to enter. Dont be that pereon who just shows up to the embassy without appointment and tries to get an exception (especially on a rainy day).

-> the emergency passport (temporary passport). The consular sometimes will ask if you will be travelling very soon and offer it. Emergency passport will be picked up the next day (never mailed).

Again, please dont overthink this. Follow the steps you've been given. Safe travels.

@Katherine *******
you may be over thinking this:

-> EMS return mail option is only while applying for passport while at the Embassy. The consular will ask you if you want to pick it up when new passport arrives or have it mailed back. If you request mailed, you will be directed to the ThaiPost downstairs. Tell them your nationality. They know what to give you (legal envelope and prepaid EMS postage w/insurance.....฿130 or so). You will fill out the return address and then go back upstairs and give that envelope to the consular along with finalizing your passport application. Unless you stay in bangkok, near the consulate I HIGHLY recommend using mailed option.

I did mine in 2018 and it was 2 weeks. They said it would be longer, I don't recall, but it was done in only two weeks. I believe things have changed and they may only do it by post, I am not sure.

Did it with US passport a few months back. Kind of tedious procedure to fill out and submit all has to be through mail. Had no issues arrived to the quite island a month and half later 🙏 chokdee

For everyone form the us state page:

I believe you are right because applying from Thailand doesn’t give me an option to expedite.

Have you gone through this process lately?
Richard *********
@John *******
that is linked from the page where you check ur status for applying for a Passport FROM inside Thailand as I have last month OK?

I got a new American passport 6 months ago. I followed the directions on the website and it took 1 month for me.

You have to mail in your old passport so you probably can’t travel outside Thailand. I’ve heard that it takes several months to do this in the US. It is definitely quicker here in Thailand.
David *********
Sent mine in as directed paid the fee and 100 baht for return. Expected it to take 4 weeks at least but it was quicker for me at just over 2 weeks. I did request the larger book as I had 2 years left on the other one but only 2 pages.

I have 3 empty pages but a few pages with some space left. Could I request immigration officials to post in those semi empty pages first or is that frowned upon lol
David *********
@Anthony ***
nothing serious, he just turned the page and put the stamp in, wasting the two previous half pages.
David *********
@Anthony ***
lol. I tried that, didn’t go well.

lol. What happened

My grandson was having trouble getting his passport, it was taking forever. I told him to contact his representative’s office in Congress and let them know the problems he was having. Thankfully his reps office got involved and he had his passport a couple weeks later. They are super slow…..

If you are traveling imminently, you can request an emergency passport from the US embassy. It’s good for 1 year, & is a fully valid passport. If you apply for a new, regular passport while the emergency passport is still valid, there is no additional charge. Email them with “urgent” in the subject. This happened to me when moving from Hong Kong to Thailand. I emailed the US embassy in HK in a panic, no room left in passport, they told me to come in the next day for an emergency passport. Got it that day.

REQUEST FOR THE LARGE PASSPORT BOOK it’ll have like 52 pages

Edit: 52 pages

not 90 but it does have more

@David ********
52 and ALL passports are issued as such from overseas.

@Richard ********
didn’t know that. Guess they can take that choice off the application.

The entire process should be available on either the embassy website or the state department website.

thank you for your message. I looked backwards and forwards and couldn’t find specifics aside from I need to apply to renew. If you or anyone happens to find the link to the specific page I’d be so appreciative to receive it 🙏🏽

Don’t waste time waiting for a answer that makes you feel good BUT just go directly to the Embassy or the nearest Consulate and hear it from the horse’s mouth
Lynnette *******

can't go in embassy. The application and instructions are clearly on the US embassy page.

@Lynnette ******
My bad.

Try emailing and calling consular services section

I know the process. My son did last year. All done on line. Full instructions on the embassy page. All she needs to do is follow those and bingo, passport will be done.

Ok. I’m not American but I see a lot of posts from you guys. What seems to be the case is applying for a new passport via the embassy in Bangkok is way quicker than how long it would take back home.

Perhaps
@Bra****
or
@Gar****
could advise procedure.
Garrett ***********
@Stuart ********
Always quicker to apply for a new passport outside the US. 3 months in country for renewals, 10 days at an embassy anywhere in the world.

@Garrett **********
LOL 10 days!!!!

so much wrong info here

I applied Oct 13th, 1st sent to Bangkok EMS, than application sent to states

ON the check status page

You requested routine service when you applied. Routine service can take 8-11 weeks. Our processing times begin the day we receive your application at a passport agency or center, not the day you mail your application or apply at a local acceptance facility.

back years ago they used to add pages to your passport (for USA at least). Can’t recall when they stopped doing that. Probably around 10 years ago.

From memory there were some posts from people where the turn around time was about 3 weeks. Perhaps try the search feature to find them - but FB search generally sucks. I’m sure there’s some Americans on here that can help.
Brandon ************
It takes 4-8 weeks and is all done by mail so you're going to need an address where they send your new passport to.

Obviously you cannot leave Thailand since you won't have a passport.

Make a few copies of the data page, entry stamp and extension before you mail it.

You might be able to fly domestically with a copy of your data page and maybe a drivers license or something from home. But it will depend on the airline policies and the gate agents.

Some hotels might also not let you checkin without a passport. They'll need to see the copy at the minimum to file your TM30.

Taking trains and buses shouldn't be any issue.

@Brandon ***********
thank you for this! So I guess what I’m worried about is; what happens if it takes longer than 8 weeks? I don’t want an overstay.

And I heard they issue a temporary set of docs that allows me to travel within Thailand and check into hotels, but I can’t find any hard data supporting this and worry if it’s hearsay. 🤔
Brandon ************
@Katherine *******
there's no temporary set of documents.

You should enter with 30 day visa exempt, immediately apply for 30 say extension. Then hope for the best. Or go to a neighboring country and apply for a tourist visa to Thailand and apply for extension when you have 45 days left from one of the offices that accept applications at 45 days. That way you either get close to 60 or 75 days. Then hope for the best

I really appreciate your response and I was planning on the strategy you outlined, but I can’t swallow the “hope for the best” part of this advice OR wondering if I’m going to still be able to fly within Thailand.

Do you happen to know of any law firms or anything that may be able to assist with smoothing out the bumps of this process? I’d be thrilled to pay to make this easier and less anxiety-inducing for myself. Much appreciate your help! 🙏🏽
Brandon ************
@Katherine *******
I don't know anything about that, sorry
