I am running out of pages in my passport and I just entered Thailand on a 60 day TR Visa with a U.S. passport. I spoke with the US embassy and they told me it takes 4-6 weeks to send away for a new passport (I’m assuming it has to be mailed to the US).
My question is I want to get the 30 day extension now (which will give me 90 days total) and then send that passport immediately back to the US to get the new passport. Will that cause any issues? Because I’m assuming I will get the old passport back from the US with a hole stamped through it.
Has anyone sent their current passport away? Are there any pitfalls?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual is inquiring about extending their 60-day tourist visa (TR Visa) while simultaneously sending their passport back to the US for renewal. They are concerned about potential issues arising from receiving their old passport, which may have a hole stamped through it. Responses from other users suggest that the US embassy in Bangkok can expedite the passport renewal process, and they also mention the proper procedure for extending the visa and transferring the visa to the new passport once it arrives.
A friend did it a few weeks ago in BKK, took less than 14 days to get his new passport. Note, the US embassy holds your passport in bkk, it doesn't leave Thailand. If you need your passport while your new one is being sent to Thailand, you can ask them for it. It's still valid until your old one is issued.
You need to transfer the visa after you get your passport. Take both passports and the letter from the embassy to immigration (or do it at the airport when you leave) and they'll move it to your new one.
you should get a letter with your new passport, and you take the letter and both passports to Thai immigration to have the visa transferred to the new passport.
You can apply for an extension at most offices when you have 30 days or less left on your stamp. Some bigger offices like Bangkok, ChiangMai and Phuket allow you to apply when you have 45 days left. So if you're at one of those offices go when you have 45 days left on your Tourist visa every stamp to apply. That will leave you at 75 days for submitting your passport renewal.
Just go to your local immigration office and see what their requirements are for an extension...
bangkok will allow you to do it the same day as you land (caveat as long as you land M-F within working hours of the Immigration office and have your TM30 taken care of, also you cant extend on Holidays) the cost is 1,900thb for 30 days...
in other locations in Thailand they have their requirements for extending before a certain number of days. (Example some wont allow you to extend until 30 days out to expiration date)
