Will my visa overstay count if my passport is being renewed at the embassy in Bangkok?

Hello,

Question: I have a US passport and want to renew it in bangkok. If my 30day visa expires while the embassy is processing my passport, will that count as overstaying? Will I get a new visa or some kind of exemption from overstay fees because it was at the embassy?

For context my passport will have less than 6 months of validity after 70ish days, so I want to renew it so I can come back after 60 days and a visa run.

Thanks guys.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about the implications of visa overstay while renewing their US passport at the embassy in Bangkok, specifically if the renewal process extends beyond the expiration of their current visa. The responses clarify that if a current visa stamp expires during the passport renewal, the user will likely face overstay penalties since applicable policies require a valid visa to remain in the country legally. Recommendations include seeking a COVID extension or obtaining a tourist visa from a nearby country before the passport renewal process begins.

and Just like that we are DONE, talking about passport renewals

Keep in mind people, pre-covid shit show experiences have LITTLE if any relevance in the post covid world we're in.

I provided the O/P the information to renew a US passport in thailand.

AND

I provided the information that IF during the renewal process (if they have to send their original passport in) they run on overstay, they will pay the fines. .

We are finished, Thanx one and all

Unfortunately for you, IF your current stamp expires while you're renewing your US passport (which if you do it by mail means you send the old passport in with the application) you WILL run on overstay and WILL be fined the 500 baht a day when you either go for a new extension OR when you exit the country.

Your best bet would be to see if you can get a 60 day covid extension BEFORE you renew your passport which would buy you 8 weeks more

OR

go to a thai consulate in another country and BUY a tourist visa (before your passport gets to less than 6 months validity) giving you 60 days when you enter.

Not a lot of other options that don't put you on overstay if the passport renewal takes more time.

Just anecdotally, an american friend got their passport(s) back delivered to their door in Korat 16 days after they posted the packet off at their local Post Office via EMS.

If you can renew by mail, FOLLOW those instructions to the letter, the thing that mucks it up is people not reading, understanding and following the process.

Here's how you renew a US passport
