Does anyone know what happens when dtv expires and you exit the country and enter again on tourist visa? Eg say you had a pretty big setup over the years and have left overs to get out of the country so need to go back. Will they let you in…
Answer summary
The discussion focuses on the implications of the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) expiring and the potential for re-entry on a tourist visa. The DTV is a new 5-year visa established on July 15, 2024, which allows multiple entries, granting 180-day stays with extension options. Users express uncertainty about future re-entry policies, as no DTVs have yet expired, raising questions about how immigration will handle individuals who previously held a DTV. The conversation highlights that while some individuals have been allowed to re-enter for personal reasons (e.g., retrieving belongings), there is no definitive guidance yet on how DTV expiration will affect future tourist visa applications.

If you can't plan for and facilitate a move in 5 years time, I don't think 60 extra days will do you any good.

Unless I'm mistaken the Destination Thailand Visa only rolled out July 15, 2024

SO

that means the EARLIEST anyone would ever run into that issue would be July 2029...

How about you dial back the rampant paranoia for a couple more years at least? 😉

Familiar subjects; DTV (albeit one due to expire in four years time) and worries about being denied admission thereafter. Guessing it's a genuine hypothetical question?

It can vary really. There’s been instances of people who have been in Thailand long term on ED visas who then leave and try to immediately return as a tourist and are denied entry.

Obviously no one really knows how people who used the DTV to live in Thailand will be treated in the future as one can argue that the DTV isn’t intended for a more or less continuous 5 year stay.

not wishful thinking 🤣 nothing indicates the end of the DTV. really nothing. but you can surely link some official news from the past 3 months that say otherwise. its always the MFA that hands out visa. its never the immigration.

wishful thinking.

Lots of information online about the history. MFA apparently did an end run to launch the DTV. Immigration doesn't like it.

as nobody yet had a DTV expire (it started by July 15, 2024 and is for 5 years validity) it is a question you would have to ask the issuing embassy or consulate. Only THEY can "revoke" or invalidate a still valid DTV before the first ones run out because their 5-years validity expires

Considering the DTV is a 5yrs visa introduced in 2024 I'm guessing no-ones DTV has expired yet? If you've had it revoked or cancelled it could be a complete different answer to the case of the DTV just expiring I guess. If you have cancelled your DTV for legitimate reasons there shouldn't be any reason why you can't then enter on a normal tourist visa if you haven't been flagged for any reason?

Anonymous participant not really sure you have made your scenario clear enough for an answer. Do you mean your set up in your home country? So you will need to go back and forth? The DTV is valid for 5 yrs from issue date and everytime you exit and re-enter Thailand you use your DTV and it gives you 180days everytime. When you reach 180days its up to you to leave or get an extension. (Extension requires a meeting at immigration with all original documents you apllied for and any renewal upto date things). So in a nutshell you can come and go as you please for 5 yrs with a DTV unless you do something that gets your DTV revoked or cancelled. Hope that helps

Introduced 15 july 2024.

So IF you got the visa on the first day, it will be valid until 15 July 2029.

If you enter on 14 July 2029 you get 180 days of stay, until about 10 jan 2030,.

180 day Extension of Stay, until about 5 July 2030.

I guess you have time enough to organize your departure,

WHY? Please show us the official statement that the multiple entry visa is not valid as mentioned on the visa.

my issue is that you are saying it is a sure thing that you can get another 180 days on the last day of the visa. But no other 5 year multi-entry visa works this way, so why do you think it's so sure the DTV works this way? Have you ever been on a 5 year visa and entered Thailand in the last year?

Good you changed your text into:

Now it is possible and we don't know yet, and I do not understand.

Great phrases, just follow the visa rules, it make life much more easy that making up your own rules and have to defend them.

You keep talking about the Elite Visa, which is NOW the Privilege Visa.

This special visa is valid for 5, 10 or 15 years and DOES not mention a period of stay. The visa is designed for people with extra privileges as discount in shops and hotels, a total different thing.

Like Durian and strawberry, both fruits but with a different smell.

the visa is valid right up until the expiry date of the visa. You can enter on it right up to the expiry date. What we are saying is you won't necessarily get a 180 day stamp. This is how all the other 5 year multiple-entry visas work.

I know METV and non-OA work the way you are saying and you get the full stamp up to the last day. But the other 5 year visas do not work this way, you only get stamped up to the end of the visa. Like Jef says, Elite used work this way, but they changed it several years ago.

Now it is possible that DTV will be the one 5 year visa where they do give you the full stamp up the last day, we don't know yet. I don't understand why you are so insistent you KNOW that is how it is going to work when no other multi-entry 5 year visa works that way and they specifically stopped doing this on other ones.

What you are saying used to be correct. But not now.

I’ve had mates with elite visas recently who tried this (cheat code) only to find they got a stamp that is equal to the sticker in the passport.

Anyway I’m

Not going to argue with you. Let’s see in 2029 I will

The visa is multiple entry and on each entry you get 180 days.

So where or why do you think the visa is valid for another period or that one day during the validity of this multiple entry visa, the multiple entry stops?

@Rob***
why do you think it is impossible that you will only get stamped in to the end of the visa in the last six months?

Like I said, this is how it works with the other 5 year visas. I have had a 5 year visa (Elite), and that is how it works if you come back in the last year of the visa, you get stamped up to the end of the visa. I have the stamp in my passport, up to the end of the visa. It's 1 year earlier, but it can't go beyond the end of the visa. Wasn't always this way, but it changed. So that is an example of a visa that I know works in the very way you say is impossible, because I had that visa.

We don't KNOW how it is going to go with DTV. It could go either way. But it's not some immutable law that they can't limit the stamp to the end of the visa. That the legislation establishing it explicitly says no extension can go beyond the end of the visa, and that every other 5 year visa works this way, does suggest to me that it's unlikely they will give another six months if you come back right at the end.

I'll be very happy if they do but I would not plan around it.

@Ed***
that it is a multi-entry visa means you can enter right up to the last day. This doesn't necessarily mean you get a six month stamp right up to the last day though, you could well only get stamped up to the end of the visa in the last six months.

That is as far as I am aware how all the other 5 year visas work, none of them do you get stamped beyond the end of the visa.

Elite, you used be able to get another 1 year stamp right at the end and get 6 years out of a 5 year visa. Now they will only stamp you up until the end of the visa, not another full year. They changed that around Covid time.

The Royal Gazette entry that established DTV was also very particular that extensions would be six months, but not beyond the end date of the visa. It doesn't say specifically about stamps, so we will have to see, but personally I would be surprised if DTV is the one 5 year visa that you can get stamped beyond the end when you can't with any of the others, and particularly not that they specifically call this out regarding extensions.

I know some multi-entry visas like the non-OA work this way, you get another year stamp right up to the end date on the visa. As far as I am aware none of the longer visas work this way any more. You do not get another 5 year stamp on the O-X either, it's always up to the end of the visa. LTR is the same, you do not get another stamp, it's up to the end of the visa only.
