What experiences have others had re-entering Thailand on a DTV after long stays?

Issues re-entering on DTV

Hello, everyone!

I'm about to re-enter on DTV after spending almost a year in Thailand with one border run. I've been out of the country for about a month.

Anyone had any issues yet re-entering with DTV after maxing out their stays 3-4 times?

I saw reports of some people being sent to second screening and one of them told they spent too much time inside Thailand. Hopefully that's not very common and they are not cracking down on DTV long stays now.

What's your experience? Thanks a lot!

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is seeking advice on re-entering Thailand on a DTV visa after a long stay, expressing concern about potential issues due to multiple previous extensions. Overall, the community reassures that with proper preparation, re-entry is likely to go smoothly.

Flew SGN>DMK>CNX Dec 18. Did the fly through connection in DMK with air Asia and was fast tracked through DMK airport with other passengers connecting to CNX.

The only thing immigration asked was if I had a TDAC. Said yes and I don’t think they even checked.

I had no onward flight and left it blank on TDAC.

Stamped for another 6 months in DMK during the connection, no issues.

Fast tracked from flight straight to baggage claim once we landed in CNX.

You don’t have to worry, but if you really want peace of mind you can buy VIP fast track. Then you won’t have to wait in line either. I’m on soft power and I will do this when I er-enter, but mostly to speed up the process. I will also have an appointment booked for my soft power purpose.

No one has had any issues. You have a visa, why are you stressing? Did you get the visa fraudulently

Anonymous participant 100 I did not. I have DTV workcation category. I was stressing a bit cuz I saw a case with a guy that was told to buy a return ticket on the spot and he was told if he tries to do extension in the country he would most likely be rejected cuz he's staying too long.

Anonymer Teilnehmer on a DTV? Pretty unlikely. Thats a thing with "visa exemption"-candidates

I re-entered through Suvarnabhumi about 6 times in 2025, only had dramas one time flying in from Cambodia in December as it was the day after the border war kicked off again, many questions asked by the IO and even had to show an onwards ticket but I was polite and courteous and got in ok, I really don’t think there is much to fear if you are on a workcation, certainly don’t stress about it.

I went to Cambodia for 4 days mid last month and came back without issues. Also on a DTV.

However, I am unlikely to make another trip there until the border situation has been resolved.

why would you need to show an onward ticket if you're on a DTV Visa? ( unless you actually aren't on one)

I’m on DTV, she asked and I had an onwards ticket to Laos, fortunately, I just came through immigration on a bad day as the war had sparked up that day with Cambodia, they treated me like I was a spy or something.

Love to read that people hear a lot of stories, but never share any fact.

People get asked questions from an Immigration Officer when they wanted to visit another country. WOW panic all over the place, are Immigration Officers allowed to ask you a question, are they allowed to check passport and visa?

Or should they roll out a red carpet, offer champagne and caviar?

This is a 5 year tourist visa which isn't really intended for staying all 5 years in the country but rather to make short trips in and out to dump cash in the local economy, so naturally if you abuse the unwritten rules you might fall into questioning, although its still highly likely theyll let you in. if you want to actually reside in the country long-term and face no screening consider applying for a different visa

Anonym deltagare 263 If the DTV was intended for short stays the allowed stay would not be 180 days. It would be 60 or 90 days. They could also have made it 180 days within a calendar year, but they didn’t. There are no ”unwritten rules” about length of stay. This is just fear mongering.

Anonymous participant 263 A five year, multiple entry special type of tourist visa. What it’s ‘intended for’ are the categories under which application is available. There are no ‘rules’, written or ‘unwritten’, about number of and/or duration of entries. It’s not ‘highly likely’ a DTV holder will be admitted. As nobody has been denied it’s 100% certain. The remainder of your post is opinion only.

this is verifiably false and is giving people the wrong impression about the visa entirely.

There’s zero rules written that it’s a short term visa and not intended to be used for the entire 5 year period.

It’s a MULTIPLE ENTRY, 5-YEAR visa.

Don’t foresee any problems at all. You have multiple entry visa for 5 years and you left for a month.

I’ve been I Thailand since February 2024, left 4 times for a week or so. Never questioned at BKK, DMK and UTP.

I am sure some get questioned based of how they dress , or look or act but if you walk up to the counter and politely say hello in English or Thai I’m sure that goes a long way. It has for me

You have a 5 year visa. You may be questioned. Their only possible point of suspicion is that you may be working illegally on your DTV. So it’s a good idea to carry bank statements, or proof of income / work.

Whilst it seems many IOs, and the immigration department as whole don’t seem to particularly like the DTV, there are are only a handful of reasons that they can deny entry on - one that is often used (and it’s written / stamped in Thai, so you wouldn’t know if you can’t read Thai) is ‘insufficient funds’. Carrying 20k thb cash (or currency equivalent) is recommended.

Being questioned by immigration isn’t the end of the world. If you’re legit, just be honest with them.

Maximus is 20,000฿+ in a Thai bank and showing the app at immigration a substitute for having cash on you?

GentleTurkey6967 law states Cash. If they ask to see money, they already have it in their mind to deny you entry.

Anonymous participant 502 Not necessarily. Certainly at land borders you can get cash out at an ATM. They'll accompany you to one. Having said that, you're most likely to be asked to show proof of funds BEFORE being allowed to leave by land rather than on the way in...if they decide they don't like your itinerary (meaning if you do a border run).

GentleTurkey6967 to be honest I don’t know. What I do know is that 5-10 years ago (when I was doing visa runs to stay here) immigration insisted it was cash, and I had to show it a few times). As far as I know that’s still the case. But I’ve seen many people comment in other threads that showing a bank balance is enough. Hopefully someone can confirm with recent experience.
