Just a hopefully-helpful heads up: Am in Vientiane for the same O visa I have had for 7 years as the sole custodial parent of a Thai child. The visa is never in question but THIS TIME they asked for my house lease documentation, which has never been required before. Lucky it's all up to date, TM30d & legal & lucky I had it with me. Best bring a copy with you, just in case.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user shares their experience applying for a Non-O visa in Vientiane as a custodial parent of a Thai child, highlighting that for the first time, they were asked to provide house lease documentation. They recommend bringing a copy of such documentation in case it is required during the visa application process.

I know people who have been going to Savannakhet for a 90 day single entry Non-O, then doing the 60 day extension and after that go back and get another 90 day single entry Non-O and repeat for years and years and years.

The thai consulate in Penang will issue a year long multi-entry Non-O based on taking care of a child without having the money seasoned. It only needs to be in the account on the day you apply for the visa itself. That is about the only consulate that will issue that visa no matter if you have been granted custody or not.

Thanx for the update (y)

Still think it’s ridiculous you need to go through this procedure every year .

After a few years residency should be granted with some co diction’s of course .

Thanks for letting people know even though it doesn’t apply to me

Enjoy

which is a topic for another thread,

Just so you know there already IS a process in place to get permanent residency and many people apply every year. It's limited to 100 people per country but western countries NEVER max out on applicants.

It does require you have 3 years of unbroken yearly extensions of stays, legally work here with a work permit, pay into the social security program, file income tax and other things.

I’m talking with doing away with the yearly visas after a certain amount of years being in Thailand like for example after 3 years in japan you then qualify for residency visa

@Ja***
, the process IS already smooth.

Unfortunately the O/P cannot get yearly extensions in country because they cannot meet the financial requirements.

Believe it or not that happens to MANY people and it's the reason they go to consulates to get visas instead of extensions.

And IMM are super nice & supportive of those of us walking this road. Nothing but praise for the new family extension officers.

Child support is not required or enforced in TH. But legally I have full, sole custody. Happy with that.

I go through it every 150 days cos I dont currently have the cash to hold at bank which is required for the annual extension. Not many solo mamas without financial support meet this condition. Its ok. Try to treat it is a welcome break. Grateful to be raising my daughter in TH. Sharing only to help someone else not get caught out without their lease handy.
