Hi. I am a US citizen with a Thai spouse. I will be moving to Thailand later this year. Next month I will be establishing a bank account and transferring the funds necessary for a Non-O Marriage Visa. Later in the year we will move to Thailand to live. I will arrive Visa Exempt and afterwards apply for the Non-O Visa. If I understand correctly, I will be given a 90 day Non-O Visa and I will need to apply for a 1 year Extension around 30 days before it expires. Is this correct? Also if I am awarded this 1 year extension, I do not need to leave the country for 90 day reports or to renew annually. I've been monitoring the Group here and hope I've not asked a dumb question.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A US citizen married to a Thai spouse plans to move to Thailand and seeks clarification on obtaining a Non-O Marriage Visa. They will arrive visa-exempt, apply for a 90-day Non-O Visa, and aim for a 1-year extension approximately 30 days before the initial visa expires. They confirm they won't need to leave the country for 90-day reports or annual renewals.

No need to live close to the Embassy, it's all done online. Much easier than an extra visit to an Immigration office but each to their own.

unfortunately the Embassy/Consulate is not close to me and getting it in Thailand will actually be easier

First thing I'm a little confused about. Are you in Thailand now or coming next month? You said you'll be opening your bank account next month but not moving until next year. Are you coming in on a trip before then? Because you can only open a bank account in person, so that is why I'm asking.

Your understanding is correct that you will receive the 90 day Non-O visa first. And then when you have about 30 days left you go and apply for the 1 year extension.

After that I'm not sure what you are asking. You would never need to leave the country to do a 90 day report or a 1 year extension? In-fact leaving the country would negate your need to do a 90 day report as it's only done when you are in the country for 90 consecutive days and if you leave the country and re-enter then you start counting again at day 1.

You would apply for your next 1 year extension when you have about 30 days or less left each year. You would do this at immigration inside the country.

that is correct. Once you get your type O visa extension based on Thai wife, and always meet the requirements every year (be sure to save copies of everything, as for each following year all you need new are updated bank letters, and new pictures. Everything else is the same, unless you move), you never have to leave Thailand again.

you just need to get a re-entry permit once you have your 1 year extension. A single re-entry permit costs 1000₿ or multiple re-entry costs 3800₿. Both are valid until the end of your extension but the multiple entry can be used for unlimited re-entry during that time. If you don't purchase a re-entry permit before leaving Thailand then your extension is cancelled.

that would be a Visa and not an Extension. Am I correct?

Well once I move there I would love to be able to travel in the region but I do not want to be required to leave every 90 days

@David ****
there is a 1 year multiple entry marriage visa that only gives 90 days ever time you enter Thailand. If someone has that they would need to leave every 90 days and return. But you can't get that in Thailand.

in my research, I run into differing information and some had suggested instead of 90 day reports you had to leave and return. That did not make sense to me but not everything in Thailand always does. Thought I would check anyway

thank you for your response. I will be in Thailand next month to conduct some personal business. At that time I will establish the bank account. When I return to America I will deposit the 400K Baht. Later this fall I will return permanently to Thailand and make my application
