What are the requirements and options for a Non-O visa based on marriage in Thailand?

Hi TV ppl... Heading to Thailand and I'll enter with a Non-O SE based on marriage. I was hoping to stay in the Kingdom for 6-7 months, and also wanted to register our marriage in Thailand so that my wife can get a new passport w/ her now legal US name (no more marriage certs!). And...so that I could apply for the 1-yr marriage visa.

...but that was when I thought we might stay for a year or more. Now I'm wondering if I should make 2 runs...So I'd come in with the Non-O, run for another Non-O, and then one more time for a stamp. That is not so appealing, and I dont know if that's the best way to achieve 7 months.

A few questions...

1. Should I just go for the 1-yr marriage based ME even if I won't need it for the full time?

2. I read that the 1-yr ME requires 90 day runs...is that true or is it just 90-day reporting?

3. When re-entering, does that reset the 90 days?

4. Is there a better way to do all this?

5. Is it possible to get the 1-yr ME, use it, and renew from the US each year? We're not planning on living in Thailand, but I like to spend as much time there as possible...so if there's a way to keep that 1-yr visa alive it would seem worthwhile for as long as we are having extended stays over there. Thoughts?

Thank you so much in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about obtaining a Non-O visa based on marriage to stay in Thailand for 6-7 months and the process of registering their marriage in Thailand. They are considering the necessity of a one-year marriage visa, the requirements for 90-day reporting, and the options for renewals while residing outside Thailand. Comments clarify the distinction between a multi-entry Non-O visa, which requires re-entry every 90 days, and a one-year extension of stay that has different conditions for reporting.

If you have a year long multi-entry Non-O it does require you to exit/re-enter the country every 90 days.

If you have a year long extension of stay you don't need to exit at all but you do 90 day reporting at the immigration office.

okay you're confusing a year-long, multi-entry Non-O visa that you get at a thai consulate outside of thailand and a year long extension of stay that you get at the immigration office inside of thailand.

Good Luck (y) You can apply for a yearly extension of stay when you have about 30 days left on your 90 day stamp. Stop by the immigration office and get the hand out of what documentation required. Extensions based on marriage go under consideration for 30 days before you go back and get it inked into your passport.

very cool. Thanks a lot. We are usually there every year, so it seems like it would make a lot of sense versus paying $80USD for a 90 day Non O each time. Thanks man! have a great day!

@Br***
, a yearly extension of stay is 1900baht. Then you'd get either a single re-entry permit 1000baht, or a multiple re-entry permit 3800baht.

You would need to return before the extension expired and apply for the next year's extension OR you would have to get a new Non-O visa start the process for a yearly extension tall over again.

Seems like the extension is the easier and cheaper way to go then. Right? Does that mean the only way to maintain that extension if not living in Thailand would be to purchase a re-entry permit and make sure to return to Thailand before the extension expires? And then go through the renewal again? Is that allowed or possible? Thanks!

@Bryan ****
, you apply for a yearly extension at the immigration office by meeting the financial requirements of banking 400K baht in an account in your name for 2 months, or using a notarized statement from your consulate that you get 40K baht a month in income.

the extension will be for a year and it will be added to the expiration date you will get when you stamp into the country on the 90 day Non-O.

If you're going to exit and return to thailand during that extension you'd need to buy a re-entry permit as well.

Hey Tod. Sorry...thinking I'll come in with a 90-day marriage based Non-O from the Consulate and then get the yr long extension once in country.
