After living / working here since 1997 (and Non B visa renewed annually by my school) I now face my first ever visa run am more apprehensive about it than perhaps I should. I plan to cancel present nonB and work permit on the day they expire 31st of July. I am informed I should then apply for a 7 day extension at a cost of1,900 B.

Then I plan to leave to Penang and return two days later after securing 2 month tourist visa at Thai Consulate . Embassy - whatever it is - and then continue my job hunt. I have UK passport. I was wondering if the process is straight forward enough. I've read something about a new regulation requiring entrant to country on tourist visa to show evidence of their onward flights out of the country. Obviously with family and home here I won't have any such onward flight details as I will be returning from Penang on the return leg of ticket bought in BKK.

Is there likely to be any problem, do you think? Also, does anyone know the cost of a single entry tourist visa in Penang? Have heard differing reports and even word they are free until mid August.

Thanks in advance for any enlightening advice to be offered.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user with a long-term Non-B visa and work permit is concerned about their first visa run after living in Thailand since 1997. They plan to cancel their current visa and apply for a 7-day extension before traveling to Penang to obtain a 2-month tourist visa. They inquire about the ease of this process, especially the new regulations regarding onward flight proof for tourist visas, and ask about the costs associated with obtaining a single-entry tourist visa in Penang.

Hi! When quited my job I just left Thailand for a day - I didnt apply for 7 day extension. Its just an extra cost. I think you can go directly to Penang to apply for TR visa. Well nobody asked me about flight ticket proving that i will leave country - but in fact it may happen, depends on the officer i guess...

I think just by leaving the country you invalidate any visas so yes, I could just leave on my the Monday but my school wants to do it by the book. They've been good to me over the years so I think I shall just play ball and do as they request. Any word on how much the tourist visa costs these day So?

You shouldn't have much of a problem doing what you're wanting.

I'm not sure which two of the 3-proof-ofz the thai consulate in Penang wants to see. onward travel, proof of 20K baht or proof of a hotel booking.

Maybe someone who recently got a tourist visa in Penang can weigh in on what their requirements are.

James McNamara as what Philip said above go for that option mate while looking for new job here. After which you can do extension of stay based on marriage via your work permit and PND 1 min 3 months contribution.

I agree that I could have done so but with no job beyond July I think it is too late for that option.

If you have been earning at least 40k a month and paying your monthly taxes promptly past years, that's another way for you to apply one. I mean there's a min salary you have to earn to work here based on nationality etc. I don't see any problem for you applying one based on this requirements.

Have you been paying taxes past years working?
