Hi all. Visa run question: I’m an American in Thailand on a STV good for 9 months - 90 days + two 90-day renewals. In September, I’ll need to leave Thailand & return. My question is: I’m apparently supposed to go to a Thai embassy in some other country to obtain a new visa? What are the options, preferably to fly to a nearby country for only a couple of days? How do I set up an appointment at a foreign Thai embassy? Thanks for any advice!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on how to obtain a new visa after their Special Tourist Visa (STV) in Thailand expires. They want to know about nearby countries to visit for a couple of days, and how to set up an appointment at a Thai embassy. Comments provide suggestions on popular nearby locations for visa runs and also mention exploring longer-term visa options for those over 50 to avoid immigration questioning.

Pardon me...as you may be age 50+... there are other longer term options available to you for your planned stay in Thailand. Suggest that you explore them....

Thereby avoiding questioning by Thai immigration upon entries...

Why do you stay so long in Thailand ?

Hi. I am 50+. However, the reason I'm here on a STV is simple: my husband has a 1-year Ed visa with a university in Bangkok, & as Thailand does not recognize same-sex marriages, I was given the STV. So after the 9 months, I'll need to leave & obtain a new visa. (It is unclear at this time whether we will stay past the one-year mark, depending on if my husband's contract is renewed.)

understandable.

If his contract is renewed....

You can get the Non O Visa and one year extension of stay as retired.

Thanks for this info. Will definitely be interested in the retirement visa if we do stay an additional year.

first you figure out what country you're going to go to so you can buy a single entry tourist visa, then you look at the website OF that consulate to see what the requirements are for a tourist visa at that consulate and if you need to make a booking online to use them or they let you walk in.

THEN you plan to go there apply, wait for the visa to be processed and then pick your passport back up with the visa in it and come back to thailand

People usually go to the thai consulates in Vientiane or Savannakhet Lao, HCMC or Hanoi Vietnam, Penang or Kota Bharu Malaysia

Pick one, see what the requirements are, and plan to go get a visa 🙂
