TLDR : Answer Summary
The Multi Entry Tourist Visa (METV) allows for stays of 6 months at a time in Thailand. After your 6-month stay, traveling to Cambodia for 3 months would enable you to apply for another METV; however, it must be obtained from a Thai consulate in your home country, as none in Southeast Asia offer this service without local residency. Also, you can time your visits to extend your stay in Thailand to a total of 9 months by using the visa's entry allowances correctly. Note that you are restricted to one METV within a 12-month period.
You get 6 month METV's at a thai consulate in your country before you wash up here. There is no thai consulate in S/E Asia that will sell them. They all have the 'must be a resident of the country you're applying in' requirement.
The closest place to get an METV where you don't have to be a resident is from the thai consulates in Australia.
If you time it right, you will be able to stay for 9 months with your METV. Make sure you last trip arrives in Thailand before the "enter before" date on the visa to get another 2-month stamp, and extend that for a further 30 days. You are only allowed one METV in any 12-month period.
