Hi. We're going to be applying for a METV shortly. Just a little bit confused - I understand that we need to show a flight out of and back to Thailand within the first 60 days, but when we need to leave Thailand after the first 90days ( after 1 extension), is it necessary to fly out and back and how long must this trip be, before we get stamped back in again. I thought I had this sorted, but unsure of the best thing to do. Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) to Thailand, you must show proof of flights in and out of Thailand within specified timeframes. After arriving, while the 60-day departure date is not strictly enforced, the visa operates on a 6-month validity cycle, allowing multiple 60-day stays with the option for 30-day extensions. For trips after the initial 90 days, options include swapping out of the country (like a quick border run to Burma) and ensuring proper documentation like onward flights and sufficient cash to re-enter Thailand.

But I needed 90 days stamp so the agent asked for an extra 1000 baht for the extra 60 days. Just make sure that you have everything clear with the agent before going to Burma.

Just make sure that you tell the agent that you need more than 30 days if you are on a marriage visa and need 90 day stamp. If you don't have a plane ticket out of Thailand, you will need to use an agent. I was quoted 1700 baht for a private long-tail round trip including Burma entry and exit stamp and Thai immigration not checking the outward plane ticket and having to show 10,000 baht in cash. I used my TM30 with my Phuket address.

You need to show a plane ticket out of Thailand and they will only give you a 30 day stamp. If you need more than 30 days, you may have to use one of the agents at the PTT station about 50 meters from the long-tail landing pier where you have to get your stamp.

I just did a border run at the end of July in Ranong.

You can go to Ranong and take a long-tail boat to Burma and back. This takes about an hour outside of Thailand. This will be your cheapest border run from Hua Hin.

are you sure the Ranong border to Myanmar is open? All the land border points up north to Myanmar have been closed again since July 1

When you apply for your METV, you need to show the following as proof of requiring "multiple entries."

A flight into Thailand.

A flight out of Thailand within 60 days.

A flight back into Thailand within 6 month validity of the visa.

Once you actually arrive in Thailand, whether you fly out within 60 days is no longer relevant, you're not required to follow the exact itinerary you sent to the embassy as part of your application.

The way a METV works is as follows:

The visa will be valid for 6 months from the day it is issued by the embassy.

Every single time you enter Thailand within this 6 months, you will be stamped in for 60 days.

Each one of your entries you can apply one time for a 30 day extension.

You will need to either leave Thailand after 60 days and return to get a new stamp, or apply for a 30 day extension before the end of 60 days but then must leave Thailand within those 90 days and return for a new stamp.

A METV will not allow you to stay in Thailand for 6 months. It's basically a single entry tourist visa but you can use it unlimited times for 6 months. If you arrive and apply for an extension (90 days), then leave and return and apply for an extension (90 days), then just before the date on the visa shows that it will expire, you leave and return one final time and apply for an extension (90 days), you can get about 9 months in Thailand out of the visa.

but is it necessary to fly out? We will be basing ourselves in Hua Hin mostly; is it possible to do a visa run or do we have to spend few days out of the country? That's what we're not sure about right now. Thank you again.

You can leave the country any way you want. You don't have to fly. But you can't do a "Visa run" as you will already have a visa so you can't apply for a new one. You have to do a border bounce.
