TLDR : Answer Summary
The METV (Multiple Entry Tourist Visa) allows for unlimited entries into Thailand within a six-month validity period, making it a more efficient option for expats compared to single-entry visas. It provides the potential to stay in Thailand for up to 270 days through a series of border runs and extensions. Key advantages discussed include avoiding frequent trips to embassies for visa applications, less documentation hassle, and cost-effectiveness if planned correctly. Users shared insights on maximizing the duration of stay and reducing the frequency of visa runs, ultimately suggesting that the METV offers more flexibility and less administrative burden.

@Ja***
, the reason I keep harping on the "enter before" date on the visa and "admitted until" stamp IS,

there is a high chance that the 3rd border bounce for a 60 day stamp will give you an "admitted until" stamp which is good until AFTER the visa itself expires.

That is why it is critical you are aware of the "enter before" date on the VISA itself. That's the date you need to border bounce to get the 4th and final 60 day entry stamp.

Here's an example of of what that visa looks like.

This visa was issued on 26 May 2016 and the "enter before" is 25 Nov 2016.<-that's the very last day the holder of that visa could border bounce for a 60 day entry stamp.

@Ja***
, The cheapest and most effective way to get the most out of the validity of the visa and the time in country is to

A ) - get the METV from the thai consulate as close to the time you're comin' to thailand (so you don't burn down the 6 month validity of the visa waiting to fly here)

Then;

-enter get 60 days

-border bounce get 60 days

-border bounce get 60 days

-just before the expiration of the visa itself (the "enter before" date stamped on the visa) border bounce one more time to get 60 days

-extend that last 60 day entry by 30 more days at the immigration office for 1900baht.

It's not all that useful to extend any of the entries by 30 days because all you're doing is burning the validity of the visa. Just border bounce and then extend the last entry by 30 days

yes but flying also cost time, and money, and short of going to malaysia, I would pay 30 usd for Cambo and 35 for Lao and I think getting to CW will probably still be cheaper considerably and more importantly quicker.

@Tod ********
agree about not being able to stay more then 270 days, in fact since this visa cannot be obtained in neighboring countries (unless one happens to have residency there) you always loose a day. In Western Europe for example, they are 5 or 6 hours behind Thailand, so even if someone picks up the visa, gets into the plane a few hours later, there is no possible way they arrive at the Thai border on the same day, hence loosing a day.
Tod *********
@Ja***
, point taken (y)

You can almost fly r/t out&back in for 1900baht IF you book the ticket a couple months out.
Jacco ***********
@Tod ********
not everyone stays there Todd. A border bounce from Bangkok to the nearest border will amount to well over 2000 baht and nine hours. I think I would go to Chiang Wattana instead
David ********
2 border bounces = 180 days. Or

2 extensions plus 1 border bounce = 180 days also. Maybe costs a little more doing the extensions but it saves a border run. Unless I'm missing something, there's not much in it between the 2 options...
Tod *********
30 day, extensions of stays are 1900baht each.

Border bouncing to the Mae Sai border in burma is 10USD, and doing it to Malaysia is free..

You're right though, you can get your 30 day extension when ever you want but you're NOT gonna wring any more than about 270 days out of that visa period.
David ********
I've said the same thing
@Jacco **********
. I put it to Todd that I don't see the difference but he didn't get back to me on that one... Why do 2 border bounces for 180 days when you can extend twice and do only 1 border bounce?
Jacco ***********
I disagree, you are not burning the validity of the visa, that remains at 180 days from date of issue. If an extension is cheaper and less time consuming, you would save on the number of border hops you need to undertake. And still make the borderhop on day 179 to get to 269 days in total.
Tod *********
@Ja***
, the 60 day admitted until stamp is the date you'd have to border bounce on.

the "enter before" date on the visa, is the LAST day you can border bounce to pull the final 60 day entry stamp..
James *******

Im not clued up with this stuff hence the question
James *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
So i can border bounce on the 60th day or is it advisable to go day before sounds daft i know but i just want to get it right
James *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Easy peasy
Tod *********
correct. Make sure you time your last border bounce to be right around the "enter before" date on the METV itself and you'll pull another 60 day entry. Then you extend that one by 30 days (y)
James *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
So just border bounce to 240 then extend
Jacco ***********
an metv gives you unlimited entries within the 6 month validity and is good for almost 270 days in country if used to maximize stay. Extensions can be obtained but are not strictly necessary if a border run is cheaper and or quicker, and no re-entry permits are needed if one decides to visit a neighboring country. METV can only be obtained in the country of your birth or a country you have a residency permit .
Maxim ***********
Yes, a border bounce, sorry i got confused for a sec. The border bounce is very easy like if u are in CM, take a bus to Mae Sai, pay $10 usd to cross to Tachilek and get back 30 min later, then get back to CM the same day. I did it twice this year. Not even sure that u need to pay the $10 (anyone?), I never cross with a METV before.
Ivan ************
You need to pay the $10 either way- that's to the Myanmar side to get into Myanmar, it has nothing to do with Thailand or your Thai visa status.
Patrik ********
With the METV you HAVE to LEAVE the country as well after 60 (or if you extend your stay after 90) days. But you only have to do a border bounce. That means you can go to the closest border, get stamped out and back in again and you 'activate' the next stay. With the SETV you have to travel to an embassy/consulate and apply for the visa again. Nowadays many embassies / consulates want to see proof of onward travel, proof of finance and some even proof of hotel bookings. With the METV you have this 'documents hassle' only once.

With the METV it is possible to stay up to 270 days (with
***
border bounces). The visa itself is valid for 6 months. If you enter Thailand even a day before the visa expires you get another 60 days stamp and you can extend that stay as well.
James *******

Same way i did before really but i dont have to go to the consulate each time
James *******

Yep i understand now thanks

Before (otherwise it's an overstay!) 60 days are over you can eighter extend or border-bounce on the 60iest day. If you can do a border bounce for less than 1900 Baht you might want to do that. Otherwise you might prefer the extension. Both ways work. But there is no way to stay more than 90 days in the country with SETV or METV.
Thomas ********************
Yes, that's more like it
James *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
So after 60 days do a 30 day stamp then border bounce to activate another 60 then just repeat the process 2 more times for 270 is that correct
James *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
But it can be extended to 9 months how does that work
Tod *********
@Ja***
, yes, if the country your from requires a visa to enter another country you pay. :/
James *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
This maybe a silly question but do we still have to pay entry into the other country
James *******

I will live in nong khai so border is easy
James *******

But
@Ma***
the cheapest
James *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Many ways then
Amornrat **********
@Maxim **********
I think you may have worded it wrong, you can not stay 6 month without leaving the country. One entry is 60 days, than a 30 day extension. Than leave and come back to get another 60 days,,,,,,
Amornrat **********
@Marco ********
or you do 60+30, 60+30 and before visa expire another 60+30.
Marco *********
Yes, Thomas.

METV works like that:

60 days on arrival

Border run to get 60 more days

Second border run to get 60 more days (total 180 till now).

After 59 days, get a third border run, getting 60 more days (total 240 or better 239).

On expiring day, get a 30 days extension at any Immigration Office. Total 269 days, nine months.

But you need to do 3 border run and get one extension (1,900 baht)
Thomas ********************
Sorry, but there's some wrong info here. The 'trick' with metv is to enter shortly before it expires, giving you 60 days. Then going to immigration for a 30 day extension.
James *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Thanks mate for your help
Maxim ***********
9 months so get the METV, and after 6 months go to Laos to get 60 more days (and extend it 30 days more for 1.9k baht), 9 months total. if you don't get the METV, ull need to visa run TWICE to get to 9 months instead of ONCE.
James *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Id like to stay 9 months total
James *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
In laos
James *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Is it possible after that has finished to get a single entry 60 days then extend for another 30
Maxim ***********
James Green The METV is a million time easier... 6 months in the country without leaving, vs staying 2 months, going to get extension, then leaving the country, coming back two months, then go extend again. I don't know how much the METV cost but if it's fairly close the METV is a lot less headache.
James *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Thinking its just easier to do it the way i did last year as this metv sounds like a ball ache bit maybe i am wrong maybe its easy
James *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Sorry i worded it wrong its possible to stay up to 9 months but im not sure how it works
Maxim ***********
I have never heard of the METV extendable 3 more months after the original 6 months. The METV need to be done in ur own country or Perth (Australia), they also do it. Even if u don't plan to leave Thailand getting the METV is great because you won't have to visa run Laos.
Maxim ***********
With a METV you don't have to go to Laos after 3 months, you don't even need to leave Thailand for 6 months, and if u do, you can go anywhere in the world and come back on the same visa. Depending on the cost of the METV vs the cost of a visa run, the cheapest option is better. If u like to travel the METV is much better.
Paul **********
Maxim,, you do have to leave
Paul **********
Your wrong..
