What are the options for extending my stay in Thailand as an Italian visa exempt for 30 days?

Hi, and thank you for letting me in!

There is something that i need to understand and i hope here i can get some help.

Premise:

I am Italian, which means visa exempt for up to 30 days. I arrived in Thailand on January 10th. If i have a chance, i'd spend 2-3 more weeks betw4 Chiang Mai, Pai and Chiang Rai before moving out of Thailand for good.

Question:

What are my (best, cheapest) options?

-visa extension at immigration office (can i already do it or do i have to wait until my permit is about to expire?)

- visa run to Myanmar or other country (can i already do it or do i need the extension first?)

-other (better) options?

Thank you!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, an Italian citizen, seeks advice on staying in Thailand beyond the initial 30-day visa exemption received upon arrival. Options discussed include: 1) Extending the current stay for an additional 30 days at a Thai immigration office for 1,900 baht, which can be done at any time before the current visa expires. 2) Performing a visa run to a neighboring country for a new 30-day visa exemption, although this method would start a new period from the date of re-entry and can be done only twice per year by land. Community responses confirm that extending at immigration is the most straightforward and cost-effective option.

and I believe after that dog and pony show that the O/P knows he has TWO choices

1 - go to the immigration office and pay 1900baht for a 30 day extension (which he can do ANYTIME :O he doesn't need to wait until his current stamp is expiring because they ADD the 30 days to your current exipration date

OR

1 - go to a border, stamp out of thailand, stamp in&out of another country and then stamp back IN to thailand to get a NEW 30 day visa exempt entry.

NOTE: you can only get TWO 30 day visa exempt entries by land in a calendar year (Jan 1 - Dec 31).

You cannot get “additional” 30days exemption by border run. You just get new 30 days visa exemption entry starting on the day you enter Thailand. If you want to get your stay 30days “more”, better to get extension at immigration office as others mentioned.

Or you do border run on the very last day of your current admitted to stay period.

. As has been pointed elsewhere in this thread, a border run gives you 30 days from the date of the run, the immigration office gives you thirty days extra from your original expiry date. If you are now in a city with an office, it's a no-brainer. 1900baht and a few hours out of your day v organising travel over a border convenient to your location which will be more than a few hours

yes, in the next few days i'll figure out what's actually the best option.

For now i just really needed to know that i can do both without too many problems

Giulio, you are right, difference is when you can do and the cost.

@Ellie ******
so either way i get 30 new days, which is good enough for me

Visa extension for 1900 baht at immigration is probably best/cheapest option. 30 days. Can go now. Otherwise if you happen to be in Mae Sot or Mae Sai you can cross the border on a day pass for 500 baht.

depends on where op is though, extension is not always cheapest.

Simply in English...Go to Thai Immigration office and obtain 30 days extension 1,900 Thai baht. Can go now. The 30 days will be added to your current ending date of stay. Enjoy Thailand.

Hello, you can very well take an extension on immigration also on the last day of the 30 days and I think they give another 30 days paying the 1900 baht tax. yes, you can also go out and come back and get the same days by land. But I think it is more feasible to make a normal extension on immigration in the city where you are at the moment.

And as I can not understand as most members this language, please translate it all in English. As long as this Italian writing is not translated I can NOT confirm that the information is correct. Please

Well yes, you can do it, maybe carrying a ticket out of the Thai, and in some neighboring countries you pay an entry. I honestly always go out for maleysia and there are no entry costs. but it is better for you to leave laos or vietanm. but spend on travel etc. if you also like this type of experience is fine. but to make it shorter in immigration would be the best thing, and savings and minimum!

Does that mean that, if i wanted to, i could just go to a neighboring country and everything will be renewed as i come back to Thailand?

Do you know how much would the process cost via land?
