New DTV Rules

Can someone please comment on the new DTV rules ugghhh brutal timing for them to make these changes. Can someone confirm that I have to be physically present in my home country to apply for the DTV with the new rules. I can’t just choose the proper embassy that is in the jurisdiction from my permanent home address in the U.S.??

Im still waiting for a reply email from the LA embassy.
Answer summary
Recent discussions highlight significant changes in the application process for the DTV visa. It seems applicants must now be physically present in their home country (the U.S.) or their official country of residence when applying. This is a shift that may eliminate options for those previously able to apply from other jurisdictions. The requirement for background checks, particularly through the FBI, has also raised concerns. Many users are confused about the specific documentation needed and the implications of current residency versus citizenship on the visa application process.

Confirmed. They will absolutely ask for verification you are in country.

You have to apply in your country of your passport OR in the country of your official residency.

OP
Gerar Teuben I think you are missing the point of what I am waiting on a response from the LA embassy. The whole issue that is being addressed is the embassy shopping people were doing before by bi-passing “harder to get approved embassy’s” and that’s understandable. Choosing the correct embassy to process your application based on your permanent residence with a background check is sound logic. What’s illogical is having someone fly 20 hours and spend thousands of dollars just to hit submit on an application and wait for approval. That’s illogical and frankly ridiculous. Physical location has nothing to do with the decision making process as long as the applicant is not in Thailand. That’s reasonable.

Get the visa while at home, no need to spend 1000s Dollars of dollars to apply from shitholes like Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam.

Jay Fit yes it ridiculous and the Thai government absolutely does not care whatsoever. it’s like their superpower.

Gerar Teuben Yes, which means to have official immigration status in that country categorized as a resident. Not just physically be in that other country, like on a tourist visa.

yes but they also want a police check and have to do finger prints for an FBI check . not sure if they will just take a local check

OP
Jr Wilbanks the finger ID can be done at any location essentially. The whole process can be done online $18 USD.

Jay Fit the card has to be sent to the FBI and you have to wait 12 weeks for it to come back

the FBI processing fee is 18 and what ever the place charges to do finger prints and then it proves your not in states of you do it that way

The key distinction is citizenship/residence vs. current location. The Washington embassy’s DTV page specifically asks for evidence of current location, rather than simply accepting a U.S. passport as sufficient.

OP
UginTheGreat right and the London embassy states territory’s are valid as well. Like there’s interpretation going on here. I can understand wanting to verify permanent residence but a physical presence should have no bearing in the decision making process. If the story is verifiable and concise a persons physical location doesn’t matter. What does matter is which embassy is processing the application based on the permanent residence. That makes more logical sense.

you must be inside the jurisdiction of the consulate you apply through. This has always been the case from the days you physical pitched up with passport in hand through to the evisa being a thing. That isn't going to change just because you would like it to

Jay Fit start your own country, or get an army to take over an existing one for you, and you too can make up your own immigration rules 😉

Jay Fit You have to beni. Your country of residence to apply and a criminal background check if your US then the FBI I’m hearing now if your presence in a US territory I’m sure there’s an embassy to apply from there

Jay Fit The DTV still cannot be applied for from inside Thailand. Also the embassy website states: “Be a national or permanent resident of the country where the visa application is submitted”

And I think the criminal clearance check they need is on the FBI level not local law enforcement.

For some it could be. FBI criminal background actually check fingerprints. Some local checks only use name and date of birth.

Do you have a permanent right to reside in the US (GreenCard)? If so you can apply at the consulate that serves your location.

OP
@John *********
yes I have a valid passport from the US born and raised with a permanent address in the States. What’s just confusing is the wording because I’m in Indonesia right now but I can clearly select the correct embassy based on my permanent address but not sure if I have to be physically present. Still waiting for the embassy’s reply just wanted to see if anyone had the inside scoop.

Jay Fit the IP address you apply from online is country specific, and down to your local location. You can't apply to the LA consulate, or any other, from outside the country. You have to be there, or have official permanent residency where you are at.

no. Usually they want actual proof of location. Passport stamps, time stamped photos with a well known landmark or whatever

Kool Breez would a VPN fix that issue?

@Jay ****
yes you must be physically present within the jurisdiction of the consulate you apply through. So for you to apply for the DTV you would have to travel to the US to do so
