Hi, I was on an ED visa extension of stay (4 years and waiting to graduate)which finished on the 26 of August, so I did not get told by my uni that I needed to cancel it at immigration so I came back on a non exempt visa. Now I've been told that I'm on overstay and waiting for the letter to cancel my ED visa. What are the implications and what are my options. I will be going to immigration on Thursday to cancel my ED visa. What can I expect and what should I plan for. I left the country to go onto a tourist/non exempt visa but been told its not valid. I'm South African and not sure what my options are. Please advise of possible.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about the implications of overstaying their ED visa and the necessary steps to cancel it after leaving the country. They learned that failing to officially cancel their ED visa before departing would likely result in a fine of 500 baht per day, up to a maximum of 20,000 baht. However, community responses clarified that this situation would not lead to a formal overstay or a ban from re-entering Thailand. They were advised to take documentation from their university and that they might be eligible for an ED Plus extension upon completing their studies. After visiting immigration to cancel the visa, the user received a cancellation stamp with no fines imposed, indicating a positive outcome.
Hey guys just an update I went to immigration and handed my letter of cancellation with my passport, and it came back with the cancellation stamp and no overstay and nothing to pay, got lucky I guess.

You are far from the first person to have this happen.
What it sounds like, is that you failed to cancel your ED visa extension before you left the country.
You need to realize that just stamping out does not cancel an extension officially.
What's going to happen is, when you go to cancel the ED extension they will fine you 500 baht per day for every day that you didn't cancel it up to a maximum of 20K baht
It's not technically overstay, insofar as you cannot be banned for it, and your current entry stamp is still valid. It is a fine for failing to follow procedure in canceling an extension.
If you were on an extension based on higher education you could have got an additional year extension after you graduated under the ED Plus program and I don't know why your University didn't tell you that.
Anyway, you won't be banned from the country but you will be fined 500 baht per day.
Take the documentation from your University saying you stopped studying on XXX date to the immigration office that issued you your extension and cancel it officially.
Hi Tod, I have a similar situation. Currently I am out of the country, planning to arrive in December on an entry stamp (2 people). Partner's ed visa was two years ago. Didn't cancel extension. Not sure if my school cancelled my WP. Is it possible to have the same problem arriving as tourists?
The problem is with the immigration office should you ever decide to get a long-term extension

Thanks for the information. Do you know if it is possible to get these things checked and/or cancelled through the Thai consulate in my current location, Georgia (country, not US state)?
it is NOT, everything like that is done inside thailand and has nothing to do with Embassies outside the country.
You need to sort it out when you get back here ๐
If you have more questions please make your own topic ๐ because you're not talking about an ED visa/extension from a uni degree at all, but employment/work permit stuff.

You're not actually on overstay. That's just the only mechanism they have for fining you for failing to cancel your extension. The only thing you should expect is a fine, which is 500 baht per day since you stopped studying, to a maximum of 20,000 baht. There shouldn't be any other issues now or in the future.
You should have qualified for ED Plus after you finished studying though.
