Do I need to cancel my ED Visa before leaving Thailand, or can I let it expire automatically?

Hello!

I’m on an ED Visa currently which expires on 13 of January. My school sent me with cancellation documents to immigration division 1 with the claim that I need to cancel my ED visa before leaving Thailand.

I can’t understand why should I go through the trouble of commuting, waiting in line and wasting time just to cancel a visa instead of it being automatically expired once I leave the country.

Does anyone have any insight/advice? Will I be okay without cancelling my visa before leaving Thailand?

Thanks a lot!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is concerned about needing to cancel their ED visa before leaving Thailand instead of letting it expire upon departure. Comments highlight the importance of officially canceling the visa to avoid future complications with visa applications. If the user plans to return to Thailand for an extended stay or apply for a different type of visa, cancellation is recommended. However, if they are not returning, allowing the visa to expire might be acceptable. The process for cancellation is generally quick, but following Thai law is emphasized.

You have to do it yourself because those are the rules and law in Thailand. Remember that you are a guest in a foreign country and by coming to Thailand you have accepted to follow Thai law and rules.

Depends if you want another visa…

It would affect when you apply for an extension next time if you don't officially cancel the current extension. The uncancelled extension will be an "open extension record" and you cannot apply for an extension, especially for a Non-Imm-based extension, if your history has an open one.

In other words, if you are no longer coming back to Thailand for good, or not more than the minimum stay as a tourist, you can just let it expire and leave. and you wouldn't have an issue with just a short holiday trip to Thailand in your future.
