Update: Contacted college for letter to end course. Letter was sent in a day. Went to the immigration office and cancelled ED.

Then took a trip out of the country. Stamped out with zero issues.

Also no fines when cancelling said visa.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user successfully cancelled their Education visa (ED) by obtaining a letter from their college to end the course and visiting the immigration office, where they faced no issues and incurred no fines. After cancelling the visa, they left Thailand without any complications.

Did you have to leave within the 24 hours or was it post dated?

, he canceled his previous and existing extension after re-enter Thailand on another status. Not the same procedure as when you cancel an extension that you are on currently

Does the ED visa need to be cancelled if you leave just before the end of final extension? My school said not necessary, and has messages from head of immigration saying the same. Because that's the visa finished, rather than cancelling half way thru for example. Can I take this advice as correct? tia

not correct. If you are on an extension of Ed Visa, it needs to be cancelled at the Thai Immigration office which ISSUED you the Ed Visa stamped in your passport. Need to get a letter from your school stating the course of study ends on XXX date. Take it to Thai Immigration.

didn’t have to leave at all if I didn’t want to. Decided to as I was so close to the border.

Could have just remained in Thailand.
