I know the answer may be very obvious but can anyone tell me what the effective difference is between a single entry non O visa as opposed to a multiple entry one?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The key difference between a single entry Non-O visa and a multiple entry Non-O visa lies in their validity duration and entry allowance. A single entry Non-O visa is valid for 90 days upon entry, allowing only one entry. Conversely, a multiple entry Non-O visa is valid for one year and permits multiple entries, with each entry also allowing a stay of up to 90 days. To maintain a valid stay, the holder must leave the country and re-enter before the 90-day period expires. The availability of multiple entry Non-O visas has decreased in recent years.

I think people are getting confused between visas and re-entry permits. There are multiple entry visas but not so many options for those.

On any visa entry you can buy a single or multiple re-entry permit that keeps the date that you are currently stamped in to valid.

so if I get a retirement visa I can come in and out more than once as long as I get the re-entry permit.

@Philip ******
yes you can.

if someone with a 90 days ( based on Thai child) family single entry visa from the Thai Consulate can get re-entry permit as well? Then you can get one year extension if you apply before the end of the visa?

@Stuart ********
so you don't have to be in Thailand until the end of 90 days?
Stuart *********
@Ali ***********
yes. You’d obviously need to be back before it expires to apply for the extension

There is the OA visa as well which is valid for one year and multiple entry.

Need insurance from approved vendor. But money in bank does not have to be in a Thai bank
Mark ********
Apply for your OA visa enter Thailand and then a week before your OA visa expires book a rtn ticket to KL same day flight.

On your return to Thailand you will be stamped in for a further 12 months. Ensure you have approiate insurance sorted before you do this exercise.

thanks for your reply, that's good advice.

@Michael *******
and you can get two years out of a one year OA visa.

@Mark *******
I'm intrigued, how do you get 2 years out of a one year OA visa? That's the one I'm looking at getting in the future so would be interested to know. I'm assuming it's something to do with leaving the country before the visa expires and then re-entering, is that correct?

The single entry is valid for 90 days and gives you 1 90 days entry. The multi-entry is valid for 1 year and gives you multiple 90 days entries.
Michael ********
Multiple entries are not common now valid for a year and maximun stay in country is 90 days. You are stamped in for 90 days each time.

Most non O you get at embassy are valid for 90 days and need to be converted to an extension of stay.
Stuart *********
A single entry non O is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. On entry you would get 90 days.

A multiple entry Non O is valid for a year from issue. On each entry you would get 90 days. You have to leave Thailand and return on or before the 90th day in order to get a new entry stamp.

Very few consulates will issue a multiple entry non O these days.

@Stuart ********
I am about confused me now because in E Visa system there is no non O visa option With multi entry. You can only apply for it when you are in Thailand.

A non immigrant OA has two options, single entry and multi entry.
Stuart *********
@Deniz ********
The evisa system doesn’t allow for a multiple entry Non O visa. The non OA visa does not have two options. There is only one. It’s a year long multiple entry visa.

I am currently on a tourist extension but I have been to the local immigration office and they have confirmed that I can change it to a non O 90 day as long as I have the money in the bank and an address. They also will give me a one year retirement visa after the 90 days. I was surprised by this but that is what they said.

“They also will give me a one-year retirement visa after the 90 days.”

This is exactly where the confusions begins.

Thai Immigration will not give you a one-year retirement visa, but they will

EXTEND your STAY PERMIT for one year.

Immigration in their wrong English call the stay permit “visa”, which is technically spoken, wrong.

They don’t draw a difference between a “visa” and a “stay permit”. For them, it’s all the same.

That’s why you are confused, because these are TWO different things:

*** ONE: a multi entry 365-days Non-Imm-O visa based on retirement

. . . . . this is a “real visa” which gets issued by embassies and consulates outside of Thailand

(and most have stopped issuing them since last year)

*** TWO: a “1-year Extension of Stay Permit based on retirement”

A stay permit, for which you bought a “multi re-entry permit” for 3800.- THB

This is just a 1-year extended stay permit, for which you bought a re-entry permit, this is not a “ multi entry retirement visa”

@Nongnuch *******
I suppose as long as I get to stay in Thailand indefinitely then an extension of stay is just as good?
Nongnuch ********
@Philip ******
you need to apply for the yearly extension of the stay permit once every year. The initial visa you entered with, is already expired.
Graham ******
@Philip ******
The one year is not a Visa it is an Extension of Stay
Stuart *********
@Philip ******
yes. That’s normal if you can meet the financial requirements.

@Stuart ********
hi Stuart. I'm confused as you can get a non o retirement with a single re-entry permit or a non o retirement with multiple re-entry permits.
Stuart *********
@Phil *****
The re-entry permit is a different thing all together. That permit keeps your “allowed to stay” date alive should you wish to leave and return to Thailand.
Stuart *********
@Phil *****
I don’t believe there is any consulate in the world that will sell you a multiple entry Non O based on retirement. A couple of them will based on marriage.
Phil ******
@Stuart ********
ok. That's why I was confused
