What are the stay durations and requirements for the Non-Immigrant Type O Multiple Entry Visa in Thailand?

I have a couple of questions about the Non-immigrant, Type-O multiple entry visa:

Is the length of each entry 90 days, or 1 year?

If the latter, does that mean effectively an almost two-year stay is possible on a one year visa?

Does the pension required have to be the UK State pension, or can it be another type of pension, eg. military or company pension as used to be the case?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Non-Immigrant Type O Multiple Entry Visa allows for a 90-day stay per entry, requiring exits from Thailand every 90 days to obtain a new entry. In contrast, the Non-Immigrant O-A Visa allows for a one-year stay with re-entry for each entry. There is some confusion about these visas, particularly regarding their durations and specific pension requirements, as previous rules for Over 50 visas have changed, with pensions accepted from various sources.

About 4 years ago - (before that time and a bit after) Thai Embassy / Consulates would issue a One Year Non Immigrant O Visa just for being age 50 and over (no other reason). It required an exit every 90 days and reentry into Thailand to get another 90 days. I had this visa in 2014. This type of O visa stopped being issued sometime in 2016 or so. It is still issued in this manner for marriage, volunteering and other special reasons - but not for just being age 50 or over ('retirement').

The Non Immigrant O Visa based on being age 50 or over (intended for 'retirement') is Single Entry 90 days. Which can be obtained at a Thai Embassy / Consulate in one's home country, or in a neighbor country to Thailand and even at Thai Immigration offices. This 3 month visa can then Extended for One Year at a Thai Immigration Office in the last 45 - sometimes last 30 days by applying with form TM.7 Application for Extension - fee 1900 baht.

the way 90 days extension works is, once in the Kingdom: you apply for 90 days extension with all the documents, pay 1900, get 30 day extension (blue stamp), and wait for 30 days. At the 30th day to go to Immigration office again for the rest 60 days stamp (red stamp)

thanx for explaining it. (y)

@Jos***
WOW :O they're only giving you 90 day extensions at a time based on the foundation you volunteer for. :( That's a LOT of going to the immigration office. :/

90 days extension June 2016 through March 2017

Actually, no

@Jos***
, when you entered the country on that visa you got stamped in for 90 days. Then you probably went to the immigration office and applied for a yearly extension with documentation from where you volunteer.

If that's the visa you originally started volunteering on when you entered the country in June of 2016 you are on extensions of stays.

The stamps look like this in your passport.

Thanx, yep, that's a 90 day single entry Non-Immigrant Type O <- the O means "other". That visa is issued for a variety of reasons, being over 50, being married to a thai, being married to a foreigner legally working here, raising children here, volunteering, etc.

On the visa you have you were stamped in for 90 days when you arrived and you apply for an extension at the immigration office.

The way I was told, I have to have a 9 month period as application goes through, and "re-apply" every year.

Joseph, Unless I'm wrong there is there is no such visa as a Non-Immigrant Type O-V :/ Could you post an image of that visa?

If you're a volunteer all you have is a straight Non-O visa and you either border bounce every 90 days to get another 90 day stamp OR you have gotten an extension of stay from the immigration office

The Non Immigrant O visa for one year - the one that required exiting and reentering Thailand every 90 days - for people age 50 and over for a type of 'retirement' was discontinued some time in 2016 - perhaps late 2015. I had one in 2014.

I believe this visa is also available for multiple entries of 90 days with a visa validity of one year. I have done this in the past.

@Joe **********
V as in volunteer

@Joseph ****
O-A or O-V?
Joseph *****
Sorry, I have a Non Immigrat O-V, which is why the rules are different.
Joe ***********
You may be referring the Non Imm O-A Visa.

The Non Immigrant O visa gives you only 90 days on entry. The Non Immigrant O-A visa gives you 1 year on each entry.

Thanks for the clarity. It would be nice if the embassy were as clear...

I think the Embassy website info is out of date in some ways... About 4 years ago -(before that and a bit after) Thai Consulates would issue a one year Non Imm O Visa just for being age 50 and over (no other reason). It required an exit every 90 days and reentry into Thailand to get another 90 days. I had this visa in 2014. This type of O visa stopped being issued sometime in 2016 or so. It is still issued in this manner for marriage, volunteering and other special reasons - but not for just being age 50 or over.

The O-A visa is also the one that requires the police back ground check and the medical certificate too.

@Ge***
The Non-Immigrant Type O-A Long Stay has always been good for a year entry every time you enter thailand for the validity of the visa.

The A suffix is that way on any Non-Immigrant Type Visa B-A, ED-A, etc. Those all get a year entry stamp every time.

Only the standard letters O, B, ED, etc get 90 day entry stamps.

It certainly is confusing. In the past it was always 90 days per entry. I just wondered if there has been a change...
Robert *******
I did read it, multiple entry visa gives you 90 days of stay each entry, than a border run and get a new 90 day period till the valid until/enter before date on the visa. Only the Non Immigrant O-A gives you the 1 year entry, it is confusing.

@Robert ******
I understand what you are saying but that is not what the Embassy is telling us.
Robert *******
That is the Non Immigrant O-A visa. It is different than the Non Immigrant O visa, difference the -A and requirement and periods of stay inside Thailand.

That's what I thought, however the London Embassy Web page states, about Non-immigrant visas generally: 'Multiple Entries Visa will be valid for 1 year from the date of issue. You must enter Thailand within the validity of visa. However, the permitted length of stay is up to 1 year from the date of your arrival in Thailand. Please carefully note the immigration stamp in your passport to make sure that you do not overstay your visa.'
