My husband applied for a retirement visa, and I will be under his dependency. We are moving in one week and haven’t received the visa yet. If we still don’t have it next week and arrive on a tourist visa, what should be our next step?

Edit: My husband visa just got approved
Answer summary
A user is concerned about moving to Thailand with their husband who has applied for a retirement visa, which has not yet been approved. They are seeking advice on what to do if they arrive in Thailand on a tourist visa instead. Several responses highlight that the dependent visa is typically not applicable to Non-O visas, and emphasize the importance of obtaining the proper visas before traveling to avoid complications. The conversation suggests contacting the embassy for an update and considering the implications of arriving on a tourist visa.

Go on the embassy fb page and send them a message with your flight information and mark it urgent. Mine came through a few days afterwards, although you cannot get a dependant visa with a non o, only a non-OA, which must be applied for in the home country. The non o-a is much more involved with an fbi background check and medical cert that must be done in the home country

But concerning that you don't seem to know what visa you have applied for and if you can be a dependent

I don’t know which country you’re travelling from & It can be a little stressful for you.But please don’t worry. I arrived in Thailand three months ago on a non imm O family/marriage visa from the UK. My visa approval didn’t arrive until 19:30 the night before I was flying out

I just did this, I applied for my Non-O Visa while in the US. It was taking much longer to process than I anticipated and I had my itinerary already set.

After waiting for more than 6 weeks for the Non-O to complete I stayed with my original itinerary and came to Thailand on a Tourist Visa.

Just this week after being in Thailand for almost three weeks my Non-O was approved.

I will have to exit the country and fly back in to start the Non-O. This was still much easier for me rather than changing my initial itinerary. Traveling with a pet made changing the original itinerary much more complicated.

Paul Allen I hope I’m not in that boat. But I just applied for my non O last week and travel to Thailand Aug 15.

Can I ask…how long did it take to get approved for your tourist visa?

I think you should wait until you get your permanent visa because then you need to leave the country and enter again to get the right stamp

You didn't say what area of Thailand, as each has their own policies and procedures and what they'll do or not do. Being that you're also looking for the dependant visa i would highly recommend you find a visa agent asap when you arrive or look for them now. From what I've read the dependant visa is a bit more involved. Visa agents work in a particular area, so look for one where you're going to stay

What visa did your husband apply for? I lived in Texas, applied on the E-Visa website and processed through the Thai embassy in DC for my Non-O. It took exactly 15 business days to get the approval. Good luck, but if he applied for Non-O, there is no dependent piggybacking on it.

Chris Theis he applied non-o June 21 Washington DC also. I guess he’ll apply non OA when we’re there and get the dependent for my self

you are moving in one week? Have you asked the processing embassy or consulate, if they are willing to issue a "dependent Non-O Visa" to you, before you started the e-visa application? Because
@John *********
already mentioned it: if your husband has applied for a Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa, this will get you, as his wife, nowhere near a dependent visa. You would need to apply for your own Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa and proof your own finances (assuming you are already over 50 years old) Or your husband must get the 1-year Non-Imm-O/A Longstay Visa, only then MAYBE the embassy is willing to issue a dependent visa for you

Write to the embassy you've applied for the visa at, and include a copy of your flight details/ticket... I had to do that to give them a shove. Got it the next day!

What sort of retirement visa did he apply for? If it was a Non-O visa it's unlikely you can get a Non-O based on being his dependant. If he applied for a Non-OA you might be able to get it before you travel to Thailand. It's not a good idea to arrive on a tourist visa as you won't be able to open a bank account in Thailand, and your husband won't be able to get a Non-OA visa anywhere but his home country

non O then apply non OA in Thailand. I guess as dependent just do it there?

PlayfulElephant2702 if you are 50, or over, you need your own visa and extension. You won't be able to piggyback on his as a dependent anymore.

PlayfulElephant2702 you can only get a Non-OA visa in your home country. You can't get a Non-O as a dependant of someone on a Non-O based on retirement in Thailand at all. You *might* be able to get it elsewhere once the primary person is on a 12 month extension of stay but it's unlikely.
Greg ***********
Greg ***********
PlayfulElephant2702 you cannot apply for a Non-O/A or convert a Non-O to a Non-O/A inside Thailand, and you cannot apply for a dependant Non-O in Thailand. You are badly misinformed.
