TLDR : Answer Summary
The MRT yellow card for senior citizens in Thailand can no longer be topped up or issued to foreigners. Current options include using a Visa debit/credit card or purchasing tokens. This change has raised concerns among long-term foreign residents, especially seniors, who previously enjoyed discounts but now feel excluded from benefits. The old blue MRT card will stop working once the balance is depleted. This issue highlights the differences in treatment regarding transportation discounts for foreign residents compared to Thai citizens.

I found this out a few weeks ago when they told us about the new cards for the MRT. So I have now lost access to the to senior discount on the MRT. I also had Seniors card for the BTS which I got when the BRT started charging again. This just stopped working when the BTS disabled it. So as a Foreigner on a Non O living on Aust goverment pension I have had both Seniors discount removed. We come to Thailand to live here as you cannot live on the pension in Aust but the BTS and MRT assume we are rich and we are not.If your on Non O or Non OA you should have access to the same senior discounts as a Thai.

Barry Wilson But when you're in Australia you get the Gold Opal Card. Can travel the whole day to Newcastle, Blue Mountains, Bathurst, Kiama - all for a maximum of $2.50!

Stephen Howell I have lived in Aust on the pension.I understand the benefits and the shortfalls. But that's not the point to what I posted. I been in Thailand near 17 years apart 2 years during COVID. I just don't like senior discounts being removed from us Aliens. I realize there nothing I can do about it, just want point this out.

Translation: I went to top up my MRT yellow card, however, there is currently no way to top it up anymore and you can no longer get a new MRT card either. The only option is to use a visa debit/credit card or to buy a token.

You can use a Visa card

I went also they won’t issue the spider card to foreigners so you’re stuck buying a coin every time or using a Visa card (debit or credit)

The old blue card will only work until you run out of your balance

The rabbit card still works in the BTS

I think they are confused the Rabbit card is for the BTS and it’s still valid

The MRT uses the Blue card but it’s basically obsolete now you can’t put money on it anymore

So you’re stuck buying a coin or using a Visa debit/credit card
