How can expats manage payments in Thailand without a local bank account?

Ok, you have the DTV, what about the lack of a bank account. Someone mentioned the K bank TAGthai card or ewallet. A quick look at there site basically said visit a branch of the bank with cash and deposit into your TAG. The exchange rate looked a little light on and having to carry cash for the purpose, in my mind, defeats the purpose. How have others worked this out. Cheers Wazza

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion centers around the challenges faced by expats in Thailand regarding payment methods without a local bank account. Various solutions are proposed, including the use of international bank cards for ATM withdrawals, the True Money digital wallet, and K Bank's TAG Thai card. Participants share that while some places accept credit cards or cash, many transactions now require QR code payments. Suggestions also include using apps like Moreta and considering other options like Revolut or Monzo for fee-free international transactions.

Great advice but a lot of places don't take a credit card or cash. Only QR codes. So now what???

Don't need a thai bank account, and don't wany one. Use CCs with no charges, UK bank (no charges abroad) and wise...
Tamas *******
Moreta app, you can use only business qr code at the moment

If you have a Thai drivers licence, you can get True Money set up far enough to pay your electricity, water, internet, and pay at most food stalls. That gets you far enough for most practical purposes.

you can get it even without a DL. I got mine while on a DTV without the DL.

@Elías *******
you can, but payment to non-commercial bank accounts (needed for things like a lot of food stalls) need the second step with a drivers license (work permit also works).

@Deslea *******
no, not only with a DL. I did mine only with my DTV. I'm using the so-called "avanced" account. Just used my DTV pdf file and the latest entry stamp on the passport.

Truemoney wallet can use almost everywhere and can scan personal QR (advanced account) and top up with cash at 7-11....many reports on Schwab returning the atm fees (250baht)
Hongthai *******

same method here. It’s as good and if you can get your ATM fees back like that it’s pretty good.

We use our American bank card for atm groceries dining out etc. Wise to pay rent, utilities, doggy daycare. It works great

Does. Monzo & Revolut. Charge for taking cash out of ATM ?

May I ask what do you need the Thai bank account for? I'm asking out of real curiosity. This is my almost 20th month in Thailand, and I've never had needed one. TrueMoney is handy for QR codes.

dude, most of the place charge you 3% for credit card, atm fee are high ( fee + currency rate ).

If you don't care about your money, yeah don't need bank account 😆, you lose probably 5% of your money ( depending of activity )

Participante anónimo 190 if I had a Thai bank account, how would it be different if I still need to deposit cash that I first need to withdraw from the ATM or from international transfers? The only way do not "lose" money is if I were earning money from within Thailand, which is not my case, tho.
Elías ********
Plus, my credit cards give me a lot of mileage/points/discounts that far overweight a 3% surcharge 🤷🏻

Atm fees are one thing. Wise allow x amount of atm withdrawals without fees but the Thai banks charge like a wounded bull. As you are well aware, cash is king in LOS. We largely bring cash over and would feel more secure with it in a bank. We opened a Bangkok Bank account earlier this year and upon returning found, like 1000s of others, it was frozen. Our visa agent suggested going to another branch and asking what we need to do to reopen the account, I don't hold a lot of hope of that happening. There's also the TAGthai card/e card, foreign cash only at a branch of K Bank, rates didn't look very generous and you still need the cash to top up, not really the answer I'm after.
Marc ********
Anonymer Teilnehmer you cannot reopen a account at another branch anyway. It's not even possible to change branch without opening a new account

Anonymous participant just get a Charles Schwab checking and brokerage account the atm fees are free.

Participante anónimo I don't know what is LOS. But in Thailand, QR codes are king. Starbucks, where I go very often, won't even accept cash payments. As for cash, if you already have cash, buy a safe. I prefer to have my money secure in my home country bank, tho.

Anonymous participant I think as a foreigner you can easily live without too much cash. And 1% which is what 220 baht more or less is of
*****
thb it's probably less than the foreign fee the bank charge you for a wire transfer anyway... Using wise to transfer money you pay about 0.7% in fees...

I use Visa and MasterCard wherever it's taken if no fees are added.

Any bigger restaurants and 7-Eleven and grocery stores will take it.

Maybe I need 20,000 Thai baht in cash in a month.

Sure it's more convenient to pay rent automatically from a thai bank account as well as maybe electricity bills?

I'd imagine it's to avoid ATM fees.
