Maybe this is useful for DTV holders.

I had to Pick up someone at bkk airport and went to the kasikorn Exchange booth to obtain one of those travel prepaid Debit cards that also allows QR payment. Heres what I learned:

You need foreign currency with you to Open an Account. I only had thb but they let me exchange 30 baht to 1 USD which was fine. The lady helped me to install the Application called tagthai which contains the scan to pay Feature. After talking a bit with her, she told me that QR pay only works when the Receiver is a Business. In my Experience, this means no payment at most bars and markets, as they use private Accounts to receive money. I went up one floor and bought a whopper with my balance which worked fine. The Application is a bit disappointing that you can’t top up with a credit card. Only in a kasikorn branch. So in short: the card is easy to get with no long term visa. Just passport and foreign currency is enough. The use cases are pretty Limited though. I just got one to try as i have a Thai Account since it was easy to get. I will try to add the card to shoppee which doesn’t like any of my foreign cards 🤣 Hope this was helpful and I have not tested it but I believe my condo water bill goes to a Business Account and therefore should work for this. Cheers na

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the TAGTHAi prepaid debit card available through Kasikorn Bank for DTV holders, highlighting its ease of acquisition using just a passport and foreign currency. Users can encounter limitations on QR payments, only functioning with businesses, leaving them unable to pay at many bars and markets. While some find the app useful for transactions like purchasing food, others criticize it for lack of functionality, particularly regarding card top-ups and unreliable service. Comparisons with other services such as TrueMoney reveal mixed opinions on effectiveness, value, and user experience.

all of these systems are pretty useless until they implement a credit card top-up.

Just be aware that the exchange rate is very bad, that's how you pay for the 'convenience'

Useless. I see no benefit. Every 10 times you try to use QR codes the bank doesn't respond or it's off or we do maintenance or it doesn't plane work anyway. I have bank accounts but even so.

So your cash always work.

If you need to pay your electricity bill you can just go to 7-Eleven and pay there been scan it and you pay them cash.

I do hundreds of QR payments a month, the average rate of the problems you described is probably 2-3 times a year. Then I just switch from Krungsri to Bangkok and the problem is solved

I've also done a ton of payments by scanning with Bangkok bank for over 5 years and have not ever had a single issue with even one transaction.

Just use TrueMoney. They allow now users without long term visas.

with cash, can have, let's say, 2000 baths for occasional payments or most importantly for me bank transfers in online places where can't pay via card.

For me, it's good enough.

I’m on a DTV and have TrueMoney advanced connected to my passport and Thai driver’s license. You don’t need a work permit. This is the easiest way to pay both personal and business QR that I’ve discovered.

You can pay in stores, QR codes and send bank transfers without full functionality account.

What is the most efficient/cheapest way to get money from home/Canada to Thailand to participate in these QR scenarios

If you don't have a Thai bank account, then you're probably stuck using ATMs. Make the biggest withdraw possible so you only pay the fee once and always reject the ATM offer to do the conversion for you.
