TLDR : Answer Summary
A user seeks recommendations for visa agencies that can assist with obtaining a retirement visa in Bangkok. Various commenters provide suggestions including the Thai Visa Centre and BaanSmile, emphasizing the importance of showing up in person during the immigration process. There are discussions about the necessity of keeping the required bank balance, with mixed opinions on whether hiring an agent is beneficial. Some advise handling visa applications personally to avoid complications later.

If you have the funds an agent is a waste of $$$

Could I have done it all myself? Probably so, but isn't retirement supposed to be about less stress and not more stress in your life? Absolutely use an agent! You'll get support now as well as in the future when you need to do reporting, renewal, and so on.

Good morning group. Quick question: US passport, 1 year retirement visa. Is it better to apply for the first one in or out of country....or does it matter?

@Cassandra *****
as against having to have 800k in a thai ban you can't use all of unless you replace it which is the lesser wrong
Steve ********
@Cassandra *****
Yes, they pay bribes on behalf of their clients to government officials.
Tore *********
Waste of money and risk of dodgy practice that can bite you in the ass later. Especially the ones you don’t need 800K deposit.

It’s really not that hard to do yourself

Make sure you show up at immigration along with your agent. (For your photo taken and stored in their database) If your agent send only your passport to other locations, you would have to stick with that location and their service forever. It's not a fake extension. You could leave and reenter anytime at the airports, borders ,but you can't renew it elsewhere later on.

@Sarick *********
You can. You just have to break the extension, get a visa outside of Thailand and then re-start the process.
