What are the advantages of choosing a Non-Immigrant O Visa versus a Tourist Visa for visiting my wife in Thailand?

Hi everyone,

Sufferer of anxiety so please excuse my question if it's a bit silly.

Uk citizen.

Ill be applying for a visa to visit my wife for 88 days in next month or so. I usually get the 60 day tourist visa and extend for 30 days at immigration.

I was just wondering if there was any advantages of obtaining the non imm o to visit my wife or is the tourist visa best/ easiest option?

Thanks for any help or advice.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, a UK citizen with anxiety, is seeking advice on whether to apply for a Non-Immigrant O Visa or stick with the usual Tourist Visa for a planned visit of 88 days to his wife in Thailand. Responses indicate that while the Tourist Visa offers a 60-day stay with an option for a 30-day extension, the Non-O Visa provides a more straightforward 90-day stay and eliminates the need for an extension trip to immigration. However, the Non-O Visa has additional requirements, such as providing a marriage certificate. Discussion also highlights differing airline policies regarding entry with a visa versus without.

if you get the O visa you can later get the 1 year version and extend that every year for 1900 baht. bu you need to hold 400,000 baht in the thai bank

There’s no silly questions. Some people assume they may be silly because they have the knowledge and can’t think that others don’t.

As to your options the single entry tourist visa will give you 60 days. You can get an extension for a further 30 days at a local immigration office which will cover the days you are looking for but you may have an issue with your airline not allowing you to board without a confirmed ticket out of Thailand within those 60 days, regardless that you could potentially get an extension.

A non O will give you the 90 days you need and eliminate that risk but it costs more and has greater requirements to obtain.

thanks Stuart. Im leaning towards tourist visa now if theres less requirements. Ive never had a problem at airline desk showing return ticket after the 60 days , I did explain once that i extend the visa and they were fine , i realise it can be problematic đź‘Ť

It’s a coin toss. Many airlines won’t give a monkeys if you have a tourist visa but are staying for longer. Some do. Generally way less will be bothered by the fact you have an actual visa and know you could (physically can) get an extension but it’s up to their policy. Perhaps phoning them and asking will alleviate that issue.

Thanks for replys everyone.

Does anybody know if the requirements for tourist visa and non imm o visa are the same , i realise non imm o would require uploading marriage certificate , but is that the only difference?

The choice is yours to make.

#1.....The Non O Visa as Married to Thai gets you 90 days STAMP on arrival into Thailand.

#2.....The SETV single entry tourist visa gets you a 60 day STAMP on arrival plus One 30 day extension of stay at Thai Immigration office for 1900 Thai baht.

AND if NEEDED longer stay,

You can apply for the 60 day family visit extension of stay at Thai Immigration office for 1900 Thai baht.

#3.....You also can enter Thailand Visa EXEMPT... Gets you 30 days STAMP on arrival plus One 30 day extension of stay at Thai immigration office.

And can apply for the 60 day family visit extension of stay at Thai Immigration office.

That third option is the easiest of the 3 described. It would give you 30 + 30 + 60 = 120 days stay in Thailand.

The advantage to the non O is it will provide you the 90 days, save you a trip to immigration. Non O seems easier to me
