What are the job options and visa requirements for moving to Thailand without a BA?

Hi there!

Wondering if anyone can help. I have a BA but my boyfriend doesn’t and we want to explore options of moving to Thailand at least for a year ish. Does anyone know where I can find reputable agents for example, to classify him as a ‘classroom assistant’ instead of a teacher - or other job opportunities within other sectors for him? Or able to work on a Muay Thai visa - where to find opportunities for that?

I tried to research online but I’ve only found pretty vague information.

He’s got PT qualifications and a sports therapy degree but not at BA level.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT Questions answered thank you! Most likely he will live off savings. 🙂

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses options for moving to Thailand for a year, especially regarding job opportunities for the poster's boyfriend, who lacks a bachelor's degree. Many commenters advise that finding legal work as a foreigner is very difficult without a degree, emphasizing that he cannot work on a tourist or Muay Thai visa. Suggestions include working hard to save money before moving or considering online work. There's also mention of expected low wages, the importance of securing a proper visa, and living costs in Thailand.

You don't need a tefl to teach in Thailand, but you do need a bachelor's degree. Without a bachelors degree, he won't be able to find legal work easily (but you can esp if you're a native speaker - any govt school can hire you for minimum 35,000 baht per month or about 1,000 USD.) He won't be able to get a family visa since you 2 aren't married and will likely only qualify for a tourist visa.

Get him to move his PT business online, I have friends that are dieticians, PTs etc that work entirely online these days and travel permanently

? What did you say mam

says sports therapy degree and PT qualifications... PT assistant doesn't even exist unless your talking group class instructor, which doesn't even require any real quals. Don't act like you've spent any time in a gym to have any idea about any of it though snowflake 🤣

I think you’ve gotten lots of level headed responses. Having worked as a teacher (just an ESL - no teaching degree) I can verify that more often than not the wages are low ($900-1300usd per month) and you have a commitment 5 days a week, 8-10hrs a day with some extra duties thrown in. If you for whatever reason are disliked or disqualified from the job you lose your visa and work permit within days. You’re at their mercy so to speak. Without a bachelor’s your BF is out of luck work wise no matter how clever a “recruiter” tries to be. You mentioned volunteering but you still need the correct visa and work permit even if not being paid. Don’t spend the money on a TEFL unless you’re interested in teaching longish term otherwise it’s just a waste of money.

thank you! It’s actually all paid for and I’ll already have one from previous volunteering in Europe, just so happens to be the easiest and cheapest way to travel atm. This was really insightful!

If you are able to secure a job as a teacher, he will have to get an ed or some type of non working Visa.

You will have to support him here.

If he can find online work then he could do that on the down low,(just dont talk about it) while studying language here.

Options are very limited for finding finding a job for both, he has little or no chance of finding legal employment.

Theres always a chance but it super slim.

Thank you! I was a bit confused on if he could teach online or not, even if the earnings don’t go into his bank account, I don’t think we would be willing to risk doing it on the dl.

Can’t work on Muay Thai visa or tourist visa

What is a classroom assistant? Usually that was one of the kids mother. Oh well, people will think of any kinda work around.

I think u should completely reevaluate that idea.

I live in Thailand and have done for 10yrs now having fortunately retired at 38yrs old.

I have known many foreign teachers and scuba diving instructors working here over the years.

A year ish in Thailand goes quick and it will not be the experience and fun that in your mind u imagine it to be.

Firstly u will be paid by foreign standards a very low wage and expected to do a lot of work leaving u not much free time to do much.

As for your bf no chance at getting a job without any decent qualifications because even with decent qualifications opportunities for foreigners working in Thailand are very limited.

May I offer you a suggestion, make a pact with your boyfriend that from right now for 1 year you will both work your butts off in your home country, no partying, no buying gadgets expensive clothes, no anything, work, eat cheaply and save everything single bit of money u possibly can.

And then come to Thailand and other parts of South East Asia and both enjoy your experience by having the times of your lives going where u want, when u want and spending all that money that u saved by being frugle and having 1 boring year to create the opportunity to have the next year that you both will remember for the rest of your lives.

Working in Thailand will not and is not the dream experience people dream it to be!

Just a suggestion no ill will intended.

Thank you for this! We actually have saved enough to not need to work, but I am planning to volunteer (expenses and travel paid to acquire a tefl) so was wondering if there’s any viable option for him during that time. :)

ok, well good luck with your plans and enjoy yourselves.

An agent can't classify him as anything. He would need to find a job that would provide him with a visa and work permit, if he can. He can't work on a Muay Thai visa
