TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual expresses their desire to move to Thailand after experiencing personal hardships, including job loss and divorce. They seek guidance on how to relocate and find work, despite having only $1,000 and limited qualifications. Multiple comments highlight the difficulty of finding low-skilled work as a foreigner in Thailand, emphasizing that most jobs are reserved for Thai citizens. Suggestions include focusing on remote work, seeking jobs back home, or considering teaching roles if the individual has the proper qualifications. There are many warnings about moving without financial stability or a solid plan, indicating that problems like depression and financial stress may not diminish with a change of scenery.
Tom ***********
Please don't. Moving to another country will just make all of your problems seem worse, and the "middle aged guy goes to Thailand to find happiness - then engages in self harm" trope is a real one. $1,000 is not nearly enough of a grub stake to get you established in any profession or job - and you will soon find it gone in the (inevitable) party you have for the few days after arriving. Try to build up at least a years income as savings before you do a life shift like this one.
Neil ********
If you are good at photography and/or video work, could you get highly qualified ad recognised in your own country and rebuild your life using those skills...focus on your strengths 💪 and rebuild.....going to Thailand 🇹🇭 without financial backing or a safety net is definitely not the answer.

Happiness comes from within, Thailand is a great country, but it won't solve your issues. Get back on your feet, feel the good stuff within and come to Thailand to enjoy it all.

Honestly if you're American spend a few more months saving up a lot and you'll be able to spend much more time here.

Try and get some online freelance work or freelance locally as well for extra cash. Make it a 3 month goal, with $5k you can be comfortable for a bit then think of your next move.

what you've described about your life, I have been through all those in my 45+years of adult life. know how devastating it can feel. Early this year, something happened to me that I was not to blame for, but it happened and I am just dealing with it one day at a time, dealing with whatever is before me, knowing things are out of my control, but just keeping up hope that soon, the situation will end and positive things will then work in my favour. Depression is felt differently by everyone and everyone has a different way of dealing with it. Try to keep positive thoughts in your mind, even when negative ones arise. That's the way I've been getting through the past few months, because I hate taking pills and talking to medical professionals, counsellors etc., about my problems doesn't work for me. I just tell myself that things will get better and try to be positive.

Try to find yourself another job, but while you're doing that, also try to spend time doing things that you enjoy where you can. You like taking photos and videos, so try to enjoy that. I enjoy photography myself, particularly landscapes, Streetscapes or animals and birds, so I know that can be a something to take the mind off the negatives in life and appreciate the world around us. In your financial situation, going to Thailand isn't possible right now, but make that a goal to achieve for the future. Unfortunately, for the average, unskilled person with a lower level of education like us, working for an employer in Thailand is almost impossible, as the government reserves most low skilled jobs for it's own people. I wish you all the best for your future.
William *********
Although Thailand is a wonderful country with a lovely people, i don't think a drastic change in geography will solve your depression. I suffered with depression for years off and on. About twenty five years ago I found holotropic breathwork, saved my life.
Neale *********
I don't know if you know anything about crypto currency, but the next big bull run is 2025 so you could invest your 1k now and probably x15 that so that will give you a good chunk of money to reevaluate your life and put you in a better position. I've been trading for 7 years and retired at 47
Pete **********
Wherever you are, the opportunity to do unskilled work is more plentiful and pays better. You can make it comfortably 1 month on 1k usd, 2 to 3 months max if you are living super cheap. But air fare will cost you 1k to get here. Maybe slightly less. If you are already depressed, it won't make you less depressed, I guarantee that
Peter ********
This would be extremely difficult. That’s British English for impossible. You don’t say where your home is. That’s very relevant actually. $1000 less an airline ticket, and one to go home (for immigration) means you will literally arrive with zero from the USA for example. It’s also very relevant as like everywhere in the world people are very prejudiced. That’s especially so if you have no money. You need to say what your nationality is and where you live now. That may not feel comfortable but no one seems to have asked both those questions and I’m telling you the truth. Nothing in life is impossible. Know that. But I think you are setting yourself up for disaster. Have you ever seen how poor Burmese people live in Thailand? The good news is that they help each other. You need more money before you arrive here mate. You don’t want to arrive here and live under a bridge. Your life could be in real danger. I think you need to rethink this. You need someone one who is willing to be a coach and an advocate. And they better be someone with their head screwed on and that you trust. I used to mentor kids. The worst thing in the world is not to be honest to someone in your position. Most people here are being honest actually. You need to listen to them or you could be moving from major problems to real disaster. I wish I could be more positive. But it’s impossible to advise when you don’t say where you are and what nationality you are and whether you have legal status there currently. Sorry.

If you have a degree you can teach in Thailand. It could be the best or the worst idea ever for you. For what it is worth, I have lived a few years in Thailand recently. I saw many foreigners like yourself come unstuck there. It is not a good place to be alone and depressed. On a darker note an unusual number of foreigners come to a strange ending in Thailand and there's usually mental health issues involved.

But, you may also find as I did, that the Thai culture is revitalizing and make many thai friends. After 4 years in Thailand I now have a Thai wife and family and we travel between both countries. But things could have worked out very badly for me also and I have had my fair share of problems in Thailand as well ranging from corrupt police through to dodgy gangs, attempts at drink spiking and so on. Its another world.

Wherever you go, there you are..... your problems will follow you.hut kne can also reinvent themselves in another country.

Thailand is a very difficult place for foreigners to work in most jobs as they are protected for thais. Foreigners are usually underpaid and often exploited and pressure to work illegally.

Perhaps consider finding work that allows you to take extended time off to visit Thailand regularly. Many people find that their living costs are so much lower in Thailand that they can work 6-8 months at home saving up and then have a huge holiday every year. I have worked in Thailand and found the hours huge and the pay so low that it is not worth it financially for me. However it has been I valuable as a cultural and language learning experience and changed my life forever. Being in Thailand all through covid I forged so many Thai friendships that now it is just as much home to me as Australia and in some ways more so, as these friendships have proven so strong and reliable through tough times, when you make a real Thai friend they are like a brother to you and will save your butt when you are unaware of what is going on!

I guess I would advise avoiding the main tourist destinations without going off too remotely alone which can be uncertain. I have found expats to be more dodgy than locals ....... watch out who you befriend.

Start learning Thai language if you are serious.

Have someone at home to check in with about your mental health. Thailand is not the place to go off the deep end, trust me on that one.

Best of luck to you.

Teaching English or SCUBA instructor are the two most common foreign held jobs.

Judging by your writing you're probably qualified to teach at a government school, if you have the credentials. I am not making a joke teaching in government schools is about the illusion and not about the skill. They hire you based on the fact that you know pretty good English and you look like a foreigner.

"photography and videography", are probably jobs reserved for Thais, which means you couldn't open a business or advertise openly but you could do a side hustle videoing people from your country (or your language skill set).

$1000 will be the most difficult part. Simply you will need more, probably. If that is enough to get you here you could go live at a temple but that isn't a good idea.
Keith *******
Keep going mate. Many of us have been there. Don't hold out to work though; it's illegal unless you have a work permit and it's in an industry that's nor reserved for Thai.

Basically if you can't handle where you are at, you can't handle anyplace else. Lost your job, and your wife left you. Seek professional help as that is your best option, and it isn't in Thailand. You mess up in Thailand and you end up in prison, and stay there until you can pay for your deportation expenses, which it sounds in your case, forever. If you can't handle where you're at, Thailand doesn't want you, and that is reality. Get out of the poor you attitude, and get professional help. You were fired for a reason, and your wife left you for a serious reason. Deal with those issues first, before you try to bring them to Thailand. That is reality, as Thailand doesn't put up with any BS. They simply arrest you.

Moving to Thailand if you have determination. You don’t need money, you don’t need remote job. Only you need is the determination in making things happen.

Personally I feel like you are in the bad situation that have nothing to lose, but everything to gain. You have a hard time living in your own country anyway(? India/pakistan), so struggle in Thailand or struggle in your own country is the same thing.

Coming to Thailand with no income, you may face a high risk of overstaying visa, finding illegal work, getting low salary equivalent to Thai, and got kicked out by Thailand at some point and never be able to return. This is not encouraged, but if that makes you happy and regain mental health, then that is the most important.

Coming to this forum will not help you since 99% of the people here have a job or save up money to live in Thailand, so naturally we are in different positions. You at the same time, got divorced so you are making the decision for yourself only, which make it easier

Trust your gut, do your research, make a plan, make the best effort and never look back or regret.

Get a job with an international company like pepsi and coca cola in your local area. After about 2 years you are eligible to transfer worldwide. Thailand is one of the locations they hire to.

With your circumstances, you won't even find a Thai woman, because they want Foreigners men who have money. Jhon Tyler Whether you accept it or not, this is fact. We all know how Thai women feel about White men. You never ask them? They won't probably tell you, but they told me. They see you as dollars bills. I am sure you know that, unless you are in denial. 🤔
Jhon *******

You don't need a Guinness book to know it is a fact. The numbers of men complaining on YouTube, that doesn't include the ones ashamed to complain. The Thai women asking for money for themselves and fir their family. You are acting like those things never happened to you in Thailand. Your ego won't allow you to accept that the Thai woman you are with doesn't even love you. You won't accept that she is with you for money. If you give her a polygraph test about that, chances are, she will fail lol. Smh 🤣 The concept if " romantic love " doesn't exist in their culture. Love is equal to transaction for them. Why would you be an exception to the rule..Be broke and stop paying for her stuffs, then you will find out if she will stand with you. She would be gone🤣🤣

if photography is your skill, then that's what you should focus on. However, it's important to note that working legally in Thailand as a retail employee may not be possible for you. Since you're skilled in photography, you should channel your energy into that. There are countless opportunities for you to build your portfolio. Consider creating a social media page where you can showcase stunning photos of cars, buildings, people, landscapes, female models—the possibilities are endless. As your following grows and your work improves, people will start paying you for your photography.

At the same time, you can offer your services online for professional shoots—there's always a demand for photographers for weddings, birthday parties, events, and model shoots. You might even consider doing some shoots for free initially to build up your portfolio. It's essential to think creatively and outside the box. Once you've established a solid portfolio and generated some income, you can explore options like getting a long-term visa (such as a DTV), though you'll need to show proof of income and savings, like 500,000 baht, along with your portfolio.

Ultimately, it's up to you. No one else is going to make it happen for you, but there are plenty of opportunities available online if you're willing to put in the work. Life can be tough, but you have to stay strong and take action—no one else will do it for you. Good luck!

The chances of working here in regards to your description may be like jumping from a high cliff into a small container of water. I don't know which country you are from, but you have to face reality. You can't hope to escape your current situation by fleeing to Thailand. I understand life is tough right now and you're in financial ruin, but you must try harder to earn money. The issue from preventing you to move to Thailand is money.

You might be able to find a job as a foreigner in Thailand, but the chances of that are very slim unless you have connections.

Just read that a minute ago here. Maybe this is helpful. I wish you all the Best.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO RESIST ?

Bert Hellinger (R.I.P.) said: "Life disappoints you because you stop living in illusions and see reality." Life destroys everything that is superfluous, until only what is important remains. Life doesn't leave you alone until you stop fighting it and accept what it is. Life takes away what you have, until you stop complaining and start giving thanks. Life sends you conflicted people so you heal and stop projecting out what’s inside.

Life will let you fall again and again until you decide to learn the lesson. Life takes you off-road and presents you with crossroads until you stop wanting to control and flow like a river. Life puts enemies in your path until you stop "reacting". Life scares you all the times necessary to lose fear and regain faith.

Life takes away your true love, it doesn’t give it to you nor allows it to you, until you stop wanting to buy it with fritters.

Life takes you away from the people you love until you understand that we are not this body but the soul that contains it. Life laughs at you many times, until you stop taking yourself so seriously and learn to laugh at yourself@. Life breaks you into as many pieces as necessary for the light to penetrate from there.

Life repeats the same message with slaps and screams until you listen. Life sends you lightning and storms so you can wake up. Life will humiliate and defeat you until you decide to let your Ego die.

Life denies you possessions and greatness until you stop wanting possessions and greatness and begin serving. Life cuts your wings and roots, until you no longer need wings or roots, but only to disappear into the form and fly from the being that you are. Life denies you miracles until you understand everything is a miracle. Life shortens your time so that you learn to live. Life ridicules you until you become nothing, until you become nobody, then you become everything.

Life doesn't give you what you want, but what you need to evolve. Life hurts you, hurts you, torments you, until you let go of your whims and enjoy breathing. Life hides treasures for you until you begin your journey and go out in search of them. Life denies you God, until you see Him in everyone and everything. Life demands you, takes you, cuts you, breaks you, disappoints you, breaks you... Until there is only LOVE in you

Getting out of a hole is always hard. Moving to a place you don't know, where you are at a disadvantage of being a foreigner will only make it harder. People in your situation usually move to countries with more robust economies to get their financial situation sorted. Never say never - but ask yourself honestly: "do I know how things work in Thailand?". Given your very tight budget you wouldn't have any cushion in case things go wrong.

It's tempting to leave everything behind and start fresh, I get that, but let's be realistic. I think the best course of action for you right now would be to improve your financial situation. Life can be hard, but as everything in it, it will pass. You can always go to Thailand when you are doing better.

Wishing you well.

When you feel like this and these are your circumstances I would not move to Thailand. Try to earn as much as you can in your home country and try to come as much as possible to Thailand. Ian **********
Your flights would cost that and then be homeless, Thailand is not a place that takes that kindly, try and get help at home and come up with a better plan I would say
Frank-Steven ***********
Please rethink that. Don’t come to Thailand if you don’t either have spare money to spend and just enjoy life or a clear plan and ideally (remote) job to make income. Many jobs / particular lesser qualified ones are reserved for Thai people. Sure, on some of the island destinations you mentioned quite some foreigners don’t seem to care about such legalities - but that would put you on their mercy and only put additional pressure on you. Also, Thailand isn’t the right place if you are already in a difficult phase close to depression. In fact, Thailand has a very high rate of people having mental issues as it is and very poor infrastructure to address such severe issues. Remember: You always carry problems and your state of mind with you - and a place like Thailand with its easy access to legal and illegal drugs can quickly only make things worse. I understand your love for Thailand. But I would suggest to take care of yourself, first. Then make a plan. And only then come and enjoy. Wishing you to get well.

this is really bad advice. He will not be eligible to work in Australia legally ( unless under 35) and with only $1000 in his bank will not be able to afford a flight here, pay for his visa (AU$650) or demonstrate that he can sustain himself here for the period of his visa ( usually a minimum of AU$5000 for a longer visa, but that is guideline only)

Low skilled work is only available to under 30 or 35's ( depending on country of their passport) who are on a working holiday and they must spend a minimum period of time working in rural and remote areas.

Your post may have been well intentioned but totally not achievable for this man.

By the way, I am Australian born and lived here all my life. Through personal experience with friends and family, I know how tough it is for people to come here on any visa. It is now also incredibly expensive to live here.

Thailand is not for you in your circumstances. Low skilled jobs are not an option for foreigners because the minimum monthly salary for foreigners is 2-3x that of what a Thai will accept to do the same job. It makes no sense for a business to pay you to work in a cafe when they could hire 3 Thai staff for the same salary. Also the business must show that they could not find a Thai person that could do the job before they can even apply for a work permit for you.
