What are the best options for teachers seeking jobs in Southeast Asia before the visa deadline?

currently, it seems we will have to leave the country before September26... is there anywhere in SEA we could go to that will be open? we can't go back to Australia, don't want to go to the UK and even though we are both teachers (non-degree) we don't have enough money to pay for an agency to get us 12/15 month visas. we'd like to go where we can get teaching jobs.

any ideas? thoughts or suggestions?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The community discusses options for teachers facing an impending departure from Thailand before the September 26 visa deadline. Suggestions include possible destinations like Bali, Cambodia, and Vietnam, along with insights into the current job market for English teachers. Various concerns about travel restrictions, visa requirements, and teaching qualifications are raised, emphasizing the challenges and possible solutions for expats in need of stable employment in Southeast Asia.

Try Vietnam. They had a handle on things, some recent problems but they acted quickly. Good bet Thailand will establish travel arrangements with them soon.

Please don't make dumb advises. Vietnam is tightly closed, much tighter than Thailand. For the OP it is a zero chance to enter Vietnam in September.

VN is currently closed to tourists.

Only VN citizens on repatriation flights, and few foreigners on case by case approval by authorities like experts working on major infrastructure projects etc.

No border opening dates set, and no dates under discussion as per now.

employed legally? what about employed without a degree?
Sebastian *************
how did you get that ?
Burnard ************
Technically, Cambodia is open but there are a lot of hoops to jump through.

Test before and after arrival. $165 USD for the test on the Cambodia end, Covid Insurrance, $3000 USD deposit that will be refunded if you test negative minus the testing fee. But if anyone in your group tests positive, it's a 14 day quaranteen paid for out of the Deposit.

There may be stuff I forgot.

Oh, online visa is not an option and I think the Embassies are not issuing them. So, you need to roll the dice and buy a Visa on Arrival.
Ivan ************
They are not issuing tourist visas.
Ivan ************
Visa on arrival is suspended as are all tourist visas. You need to buy a business (ordinary) visa in advance from a consulate. May actually be possible if you were going to work there.
Burnard ************
@Ivan ***********
That is strange. Last I heard, it was the opposite and Cambodian Consulates were not issuing them. But, I agree, everyone should check there first.
Jane ***********
Isn't Thailand the best place to be to get teaching jobs? Schools are desperate and they are talking about 'in country' visas for teachers.
Ivan ************
The possibility of instant blacklisting depends on how they calculate overstays after Sept 26. I personally think they will start them from then, (in which case you have 90 days before you are banned) but it is possible with the "amnesty" they might consider your overstay to start from whenever your original stamp ran out. That's unlikely, but if they did do it that way you'd be over 90 days overstay and likely get a 1 year (not 5 year) ban. 5 year ban would be if they went out and actively arrested people which is technically possible too but even more unlikely.
Troy *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
it is, and we are here with teaching jobs, but the deal with the final amnesty is that if you don't leave before September 26, you get an instant 5-year blacklisting. and that's not what we want... also, Thailand doesn't not expect to be open for normal tourists til next year so it's not possible to leave and comeback in.
Fred *********
@Troy ******
haven’t heard that one before

. That's if you deliberately overstay. There is provision for further extension, although options are running out for tourists, but long stay visas have possibilities if they can show proof of necessity, for example if they are supporting a family, or have a work contract.
Sebastian *************

. Just announced today. I think the ambassador is getting pissed off with people who are trying every angle not to go home
Dianne *****
@Bobby *******
yeah I got that impression too. Yet in his addresses in March he was advising Australians that if they had a place to stay and sufficient funds to do so, to stay put and expect to shelter in place for some time. I sense some irritability in his addresses now, like it's Australian citizen's/resident's own fault that airfares are so high now and that returning citizens will have to pay for their own quarantine. Implicit message being; "you should have returned home when we told you to". Mixed messages, much
Bobby ********
@Dianne ****
. A lot has changed in the last 4-5 months, and I think back in March most people thought it would be all over by August. Now it's starting to look like it could be another year, I think he's getting tired of the perpetual whiners, who now realise they have to leave Thailand and go home, many expecting free flights and no quarantine. The world is in crisis, there are no more cheap fares and unfortunately for those returning quarantine has to be paid for under the "user pays" system. I would be ratty too, if I'd organised repatriation flights months ago which initially were oversubscribed, and when it came time to pay the $
********
fare (with free quarantine and no limit on arrivals) people disappeared and flights left with stacks of empty seats. You can rest assured if the embassy starts handing out letters again, the expressions of interest will drop off again as people will be thinking "great - another free ride". Bottom line is the expensive fares and government quarantine are here for the long haul. Nothing will change in the short term, except fares might go higher

Just because they are selling them doesn’t mean they will take off. All airlines are doing this. They need the income and being able to sit on refunds from people who had purchased helps their cash flow.
