TLDR : Answer Summary
Immigration in Thailand has been requiring 12 months of bank statements for retirement visa renewal since the rule change in late 2018. This shift occurred when they stopped accepting embassy letters as proof of income, leading to stricter requirements for demonstrating financial stability. Now, applicants must show consistent funds either through monthly transfers or maintained balances in their bank accounts.

First, all immigration offices allow you to apply for a new extension of stay 30 days from the expiration of your current permission to stay, some offices allow you to do so 45 days early. Do it as early as possible. Why? Because then time is on your side when it comes to unexpected problems. You have nothing to lose by doing it early (the new extension of stay will start from the day your old one expires, not from when you apply).
For example, some banks (Bangkok Bank, being one) do not keep 12 months worth of client data at all branches. If you need a 12-month statement from one of these banks it can take a week or more to get the statement issued from their headquarters in Bangkok.

For the last 10 years, always. Bueng Kan. Nong Khai
Every office has their own interpretation and can change anytime. What was good last year is probably not the same this year especially when new staff come in...

Since January 2019 if you are Australian and December 2018 if you are from the US or UK
not actually true. I believe you're confusing two separate things
No matter what your nationality IF you're using banked money method for your retirement extension you show a year's transaction history. :O
I believe you're mixing up that with the people from the US, UK or Australia who use monthly income method but can't get an embassy letter and instead need to show a 12 months of international transfers of 65K baht a month

Because the balance can never drop below 400,000 at any time during the year.

Could I be enlightened. The time the 800.000 Baht, has to be on a account when you ask extension? Some say, 2, other 3 months.....
two months before you apply and for 3 months afterwards. Then you can let it fall to 400,000 until you're two months before your next extension when it needs to be back up to 800,000 again
they probably have a way to designate a beneficiary, which is something we should all do for all of our financial accounts.

Last year they made me do it and Bangkok Bank takes 7 days to push a button hence I was on overstay 5 days because fell near weekend and they made me pay extra 2500 dollars. I was NOT HAPPY! I told BB that's "BullS&&T" just push the button. Nope and it took exactly 7 days. this year Febuary went in with the 12 months no problem.

Last year I ordered my statement from Bangkok Bank expecting it to be there in 7 days. It took over two weeks. I think someone forgot to order it or it fell down behind a filing cabinet. Fortunately I'd given myself plenty of time (I started the process 6 weeks before the due date anticipating f_ck ups)
Not sure went to Pattaya but it was "official" looking stamps and letterhead and 150b a pop. What a racket. Love residence certificate 300 baht and you can not get a driver's license without one and you can not renew without new one (although nothing changed in 4 years)
Laws are arbitrary. Many provinces make up rules as they go along. It was great for 1st 12 or 14 years. Then the " get rid of farang " mode set in.
Now with Covid,
Well, you know....

In the Kasikorn-App K+ you can request a statement for the last 12 month. They send the statement per email with a password.
in Phuket if you have the bank statement the bank letter and 12 months printout from your bank book all pages signed they'll accept that as well

Since last year. Last year it was like the year before. And the year before was like the year before.

The changes back at the end of Dec 2018 (when the aussie, UK and US consulates stopped issuing embassy notary letters guaranteeing funds overseas) is what started this whole "re-vamp" of both the monthly income method (where you now need to transfer IN to the country the 65K baht a month from abroad) and the banked money method (where it has to be in the account for 2 months before, 3 months after and then can't go lower than 400K baht for the rest of the year).
, correct. Over the past 5 years, the visa practice (they keep saying not the rules) has been tightened more and more. It makes more and more ppl leaving Thailand. Let's hope things are not being tightened even further... :-)
bank branch can only do 6 months you have to apply a week before your due to apply for your extension . Or you can get bank statement for 6 months with letter and copy 12 months yourself and sign each page. The accept this in Phuket if it matches the 6 months from the bank
Bangkok bank will only do 6 months in branch have to apply for longer takes 7days. In branch its β150 for the 6 month printout and letter costs the same
plenty of money goes back to the junta or kept by some bar girl wife. Either way it will be invested in Thailand, probably for a new car or blue roof tiles in isaan.
non I'd say if your married Thai law say it goes to your wife. If you haven't got a will your a bloody idiot. Same in Australia no will your family have to fight the government for everything
Read my original comment! I was not referring to married retirees!!
Bobby ********
Barry Mutch. I get exactly what you're saying. You're referring to the old lonely farangs who don't have anyone here or anywhere else in the world, and don't have any written instructions as to what happens to their "worldly possessions". And I'm sure there's more than a few like that I agree with you that if no-one comes forward the money would eventually fold into some unclaimed money government fund, and I doubt the government would donate it to a charity!
my wife knows which banks I'm with where I keep my bank books and it's hers when I kick off. My kids in Australia and wife know everything in Australia is my kids in Australia everything in Thailand is my wife's and kids here it's in my will
that most of them have (in)significant thai others who know their ATM pin code and would immediately start bleeding the money out of the account BEFORE they reported the death to the bank :P
My last extension needed to be “reviewed”. Said they would call for me to return. 3 weeks later I was called in to bring an updated copy of my bank book and another letter from the bank, then another wait. 3 trips to immigration. Reason was, “many farangs trying to cheat the system”
This particular officer seems to dig deep. Even the Thai parking attendant knows. Says many farangs having to make multiple trips.
I understand it is their job to make sure we abide by the requirements set forth, but I have never given them a reason to question me. 🤷
, if your profile is to be believed and you are in Kalasin, there was a big swap up there where they shuffled around the heads of the offices and most people had that "wait for review" b/s happen to them. It was until the new section head got there and settled in
Mike **********
Yep. Last year same officer had me return to the bank for another letter because the bank didn’t list the monthly balances on the letter. Even though copies of the bank booked proved the balances. 🤦♂️🤣
I understand this officer is the big boss now. Just gotta make sure we’re in compliance. It’s an inconvenience for the extra efforts and trips especially during this pandemic craze, but in the end I know I exceed the requirements.

Okay, the seasoning of funds for banked money method changed a good while back.
BEFORE you needed to only have the 800K baht in your bank account for 2 months before your FIRST yearly extension based on retirement and then for 3 months for every yearly extension after that,
BUT
When they changed the rules it went to 800K baht in your account for 2 months before you apply for your extension, the funds need to stay in the account for 3 months AFTER you get the extension granted and then the balance can't fall below 400K baht the rest of the year. <- Those are the seasoning rules in effect for yearly extensions based on retirement using banked money method as proof of funds.
IF you're using a regular savings account (not a fixed deposit one) and don't update your bank book every transaction OR at least every month when you do update the bank book all it usually prints is a transaction summary (money in money out since the last update). That's NOT enough information for the immigration office to tell you met the proof of funds. SO they make you go to your bank and get a print out of a year's transaction history.
Most banks can print 6 months of that history on the spot and you have to order the other 6 months which takes about 5 days.
Hope that answered your question and stopped the asinine responses from the trolls.
10 days for Bangkok Bank in Korat. Amazing the Banks do not have Internet banking 555

You must prove you have money. There are several ways to do that. Before, the embassies confirmed your income based on the annual tax report. Today most embassies don't do this any longer, but most embassies are ready to legalize letters from your pension company, government, and others certifying your income. Most immigrations accept such proof of income.
, TiT. By end of the day, everything is up to the officer of the day. However, the method above will work at most immigrations. In other words, there are still alternatives (in most cases) to banked money and monthly transfers into Thailand.
u mentioned "before, the embassies..." ..."...based on the annual tax report." at least with the US embassy income affidavit, it was not based on anyone's annual tax report, but was based on whatever the person wrote on the form as their income. Eventually, Thai immigration realized that not all individuals were stating an accurate amount. They demanded that the US embassy confirm/ verify that the amount written on anyone's income affidavit was accurate. The US embassy and other embassies said they could not/would not undertake that verification task, so, that income affidavit option ended shortly thereafter.
, sure, I don't know the practice of all embassies. The official story was that the embassy had to "guarantee" the income to the Thai authorities. It was stated that an annual tax report didn't guarantee an income. They should also guarantee the income in THB. If the US Embassy had a practice of making an income letter based on whatever ppl reported themselves, then I guess we can thank the US for making the procedure much more complicated :-) Most embassies replied that they could not guarantee the income by any means and especially not in THB. "Guarantee" is a strong word.
Just so people know; there are three ways to meet proof of funds for a retirement extension; all banked money, monthly income and the combination method (part banked money part monthly income)
, as stated, there are several ways to prove your income. Here I am stating another way than the other answers above. Let ppl choose the way they prefer.

Font need that just. 800l in bank and leave it there 😀
last year the immigration officer in Chiang Mai went over my yearly statement with a fine toothed comb, adding up all of the monthly (65,000 bht plus) transfers trying to get to a total of 800,000. Which is not how I understood it to work. Had I only transferred strictly 65K a month I would only have brought 780,000 baht into my account. He must have added it up and re-added it up 4 times, getting himself confused including a transfer that shouldn't have been part of the total and omiting one that should. It was painful to watch. This year I've made sure my monthly transfers add up to more than 800,000 over twelve months (which is more like 66K to 67K a month) just in case they throw that at me again
and most important, the monthly deposits must show up as ‘International Transfer’ in your bank book and printed bank statements. If it just says ‘Deposit’, it doesn’t count toward the minimum 65,000 THB.
OX Retirement Visa is a 10 year Visa extendable on the 5th year for another 5 years....Funds are only required to be shown in Thai Bank account if you extend in Thailand.👍
OA and OX Visas can only be applied from your home country, hence on application you only need to show funds from your home countries bank account...no need for giving an address till you do TM30 to advise of Thai address.
Yes..If you are going home every year...re-apply for your.OA visa..you never need to keep any money in a Thai bank account....or get a OX Visa (5 year extension, show 3 million baht funds)...go home every 5 years and re-apply ...and you still never keep any money in Thai Bank account.
$2,500 going in but how long did u have to have this amount showing as an income prior to ur Visa app.
And where is the source of the income from , can I feed the acc. I show the immigration , with my other acc. Or is it from a company acc. Paying me an income ?
the source of the income in not important ie it doesn't need to come from a pension fund, the important stipulation is though that it needs to clearly come from overseas each month. So you couldn't feed the account you are using for immigration from one Thai Bank account to another. You can feed your Thai Bank account with transfers from your international bank each month as long as your transfer is coded in your Thai Bank account as FTT (an international transfer). Like you I would rather spend the money that is in my Thai Bank account throughout the year rather than to bring across such a big sum to sit dormant in a low interest account. It makes more sense to me (and safer) to have the bulk of my money working for me in my own country
Unless you’d really rather not, probably best to put the 800k in a Thai bank as soon as you arrive. Needs to be there for at least 2 months before your first extension.
It’s more difficult for the first one. It should be fine but depends on the IO. Another option is to just pay an agent the first time then make sure you have the monthly amount for the next one. Remember, it has to be a minimum of 65k baht every single month without fail for the full 12 months.
