I will be applying for a12 month extension on my retirement visa and have the required 800,000 in the bank. How do they check on the amount of 400,000 which is now required to be in situ for months? Is another trip to immigration required?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a 12-month extension on your retirement visa in Thailand, you'll need to show proof of maintaining a minimum bank balance of 400,000 THB for the required period. The current practice for verifying this balance involves showing your bank statement or bank book during your extension application. Some users report that Thai immigration checks the balance during the 90-day reporting or when you submit your application. Since the new rule enforcing this requirement started on March 1, 2019, there is still some uncertainty regarding enforcement and the consequences of dipping below the required amount. It's advisable to check directly with immigration on your application day for specific documentation requirements and procedures.

And as mentioned a few times, this new rule came into play on 1st March 2019. We will know the answer next year. Thanks all.

It was the thought of spending more days at Immigration that I was concerned about. I will ensure it does not go below 400,000 as last year I went a few thousand below 800,000 for about 3 days and was refused. They would not accept that at some times there was nearer 900,000 in my bank! I had to revert to the pension way via the embassy but that is no longer permitted.

@Ga**
- you can still do the pension method - just that you need to show the monthly income / transfers by bank statement (rather than a letter from. The embassy)

You should ask them when you submit your 1 year extension application. Or they will tell you at that time. If no one knows now then you just have the money in the bank for when they figure it out. If you are using Immigration in Bangkok you have nearly every bank branch there to provide whatever documentation you need when you need it.

Its 800k for 3 months after being granted and never less than 400k. At the moment its fair to say no one knows how they'll check or the repercussions of going below 400k. It's been mooted that you'll face problems getting subsequent yearly extensions if you don't follow the 400k sub-rule - but it's not been a year yet since this came into effect - so we don't know.

For your extension you need the normal papers means a letter from the bank and depending where you live a copy of all pages of the bank book to show it was always in.....for the second question , here on phuket they will ask you at the next 90 days stamp, they ask to see that still 400 are in the bank.....but as you know ...not every time ....depending on the officers

It all depends on the local Thai immigration office as to how they will enforce the rules of maintaining a minimum of 400,000 Thai baht in a Thai bank. If you fail to meet the requirement, then when you go to extend for an added year Extension of Stay 365 Days...you may be denied the extension as you did not follow the rules.

Since the rules only came into effect 1st March 2019, nobody really knows yet. The educated guess is that they will check at your next application for extension.
