Should I apply for a one-year extension of my Non-O visa before or after my trip to Vietnam?

Hello, I am planning to travel to Vietnam. I currently have a 90-day Non-O visa and I will return 15 days before the visa expires. I will also obtain a re-entry permit.

My question is whether it is better to apply for the one-year extension of stay before traveling or after I return, or if it does not matter. I am asking from a practical point of view, especially if someone has been in a similar situation. From a legal point of view, there should not be any issues.

Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, holding a 90-day Non-O visa, inquires about the best timing for applying for a one-year extension of stay before traveling to Vietnam, considering they will return 15 days before the visa expires and will obtain a re-entry permit. Community responses suggest that applying after returning may be preferable, as it allows for more time to gather necessary documents and address any potential issues with the application. However, some users note that it may not matter much and emphasize the importance of not waiting until the last minute to apply.

in case you use the bank deposit as the financial proof for the application to the extension of the stay permit, you need to time the date of application rather according to the deposit seasoning requirement than according to your return from a trip from abroad. And better don't leave it to the last minute in case some documents are missing or asked for . . . . . BTW you still have not answered the question about on what reason the extension is supposed to get applied for . . as each reason requires different documentation

well, a 1-year extension on a Non-O family visa is always issued for 4 weeks "under consideration", and Immigration will conduct a home visit to you and your wife within this period. So this definitely must be agreed upon with your Immigration office if you intend to apply before you travel. If you stay in Thailand after you submitted the application, you won't have to worry as you will be at home when they conduct the visit

I've travel out of thailand during my initial 90days nonO with a single re entry permit.....does not matter as long as you are back and have enough time to do your 1yr extension

If you are applying for an extension that might require an under consideration period and house visit then that might overlap your travel plans so please tell us the reason for the extension

Both are possible.

Consider which date will be more important to you for extending your visa stay next year.

This was crucial for me because I was unable to provide the pension documents at the beginning of January.

well, it is not the same for both, as a 1-year extension on a Non-O family visa is always issued for 4 weeks "under consideration", and Immigration will conduct a home visit to him and his wife within this period.

So this must definitely be communicated with his Immigration office if he intends to apply before he travels.

If he stays in Thailand after he came back from the trip abroad and after he submitted the application, he need not worry as he will be present at home when they conduct the visit

Just leave yourself enough time to extend when you return a lot of time they send you off for more documents

It doesn't really matter. I like to renew mine well before expiry date in case of any issues. I don't like leaving it until the last minute
