TLDR : Answer Summary
The 45-day visa exemption for UK travelers to Thailand is currently in effect but is set to expire on April 1st, after which it will revert to the standard 30-day visa exempt entry.

You cannot get visa on arrival if you are from the UK.

You can get visa exempt. This is temporarily extended to 45 days and that will end on April 1st when it returns to 30 days visa exempt entry.

Do you know if a bus out of thailand within 60 days of SETV will be accepted as proof of onward travel or does it have to be a return flight to your home country ?

That's tough to answer. Some places will accept it and some will not. Of the places that will accept it, you need to make sure it's an actual ticket that goes out of Thailand, and not just a bus ticket to the border city on the Thai side with plans to cross the border on your own.
