I wonder if it is possible to apply for a residence certificate at the immigration with METV. I don't work and just live here in rental condo. I don't have a valid driver's license elsewhere and I would like to apply one while being here. Thanks in advance ๐Ÿ™

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses the possibility of obtaining a residence certificate in Thailand while on a METV. Several commenters confirm that it is possible to apply for a residence certificate at the immigration office if you have a rental agreement. However, the issuance may depend on whether you are doing 90-day reporting, which is required by some offices, especially in Bangkok. Many users suggest that foreigners often find it easier to obtain the certificate through their embassies due to processing times and fees associated with immigration offices.

i just got one at my embassy...it was 3 times the cost BUT I got it in under 15 minutes and didn't have to sit at Changwattana half the day only to for it be mailed out in 2 weeks time (sometimes it doesn't even arrive)

Yes mate. The British Embassy have outsourced there enquiry dept and the police don't tend to do anything for nothing when it comes to needing a police report.
Troy *********
Ron, is that for real?

@Robert ******
They DO write you a receipt at Chaengwattana so it's NOT just goin' into someone's pocket.
Ron *******
No difference to getting a police report really. They can and do charge or not as they see fit. Thailand isn't a society where people have a mind mostly, to do anything for free. It's how it is.

Email the British Embassy regarding a visa to take your wife or girlfriend to the UK. The cost is now nearly ยฃ5.50 per email. They have outsourced there enquiry dept.
Robert *******
They claim the 200 baht is for sending it to you registered mail, but I think we all know it does not cost 200 baht to do that. Who knows?

I thought it was free at CW...cheeky buggers

At Krabi Immigration - they charge nothing and it doesn't take too long most times
Robert *******
You are lucky then if that is the case. At the US Embassy they charge $50 which is 1,666 baht. At Bangkok Changwattana Immigration office they charge 200 baht. So that figures out to be 8.33 times more at the Embassy than at Immigration.

I agree with
@R**
, in Bangkok if you're NOT doing a 90 day report you can't use the immigration office for a residence certificate.

BTW: ONLY the main immigration office at Chaengwattana can issue residence certificates..

Go to Pattaya immigration
Ron *******
Unless they are doing 90 day reports yes. It is then posted out to you and can take a month or more to receive it.
Ron *******
Thank you Robert. I know the time scale seems to vary according to what I hear from people.
Robert *******
Actually they will tell you 3 weeks and if you haven't received it to come back, which happened once to me and they gave one to me on the spot when I went back. Another time I received it in 10 days. But yes you are correct, they will want a copy of your last 90 day report or they will not give you one at least If you are talking about getting it at Chaengwattana in Bangkok.

Wow -- that is a sad case... So most every foreigner in BKK who wants to buy a motorcycle in BKK has to go to their own Embassy ... good grief
Ron *******
Nobody living in Bangkok we have ever known will get a residents certificate unless they are doing 90 day reports. We have this question every week.
Joe ***********
There is more than one office in Bkk
Ron *******
Unless you are doing 90 day reporting, Bangkok will not issue a residents certificate. You maybe able to get one from your Embassy in Bangkok.
Ron *******
Which immigration office?
Ron *******
As far as I am aware it is only Bangkok immigration that requires you to do 90 day reporting in order to get a residence certificate. Other offices have different rules varying office to office on what they require.

What you can't do is obtain a permit in say Chiang mai where it's easy to get one with a temporary address and then use it to do your business in another province such as Bangkok.
Chris ******
I did not need 90 day reports in chiang mai nor in Mae hong son. Guess it does matter where you apply then. ;)

I think the main question is that I don't have 90 days report done. So no matter where I apply I guess the answer is a no, I can't get the certificate. Thanks anyway!
Ron *******
Should he go and live in Chiang Mai? He lives in Bangkok
Lamar *******
You can get one for 500 thb with one day turn around at Promenada in Chiang Mai
