TLDR : Answer Summary
If you plan to enter Thailand on a 30-day visa exemption, it's essential to have an onward ticket, as airlines often require proof of departure within that 30 days. Some travelers suggest obtaining a 60-day tourist visa prior to arrival to avoid complications, as this allows a longer stay without concerns over airline policies regarding return flights.

You will need a onward ticket within the 30 day visa excempt, since you have only got permission to stay 30 days, and have to show that you will comply with that.

There is a much better and cheaper way to do it.

Go to

and apply for a 60 day, touristvisa, you get in 7-10 days at the most.

Then you don’t have to use holiday time to travel to a immigration office, waitingtime, and uncertainty if they will grant you the extension.

Doing it the way you described, may give the immigrationofficer the impression that you are a dishonest person, because visa exemption will grant you 30 days in Thailand, but you show signs of not intenting to leave within the 30 days, he can grant you.

Airline usually only ask if you have return ticket, not what date it is.

Cheap one way ticket to Vietnam for less than $30 with Expedia and they give you 24 hrs to cancel the ticket

Just don’t forget to print the ticket before you cancel it lol

I just booked with Thai airways for return within 30 days then change return flight for free when in Thailand

It will be same a roulette if the airline allow you check in or not. Better buy a cheap ticket to Cambodia within the first 30 days

Just buy a dummy ticket for 30 days

Just get a 60 day visa before you get here

the airline can refuse boarding if you don't have a flight out of Thailand within the 30 days you will get stamped in
