TLDR : Answer Summary
You can generally apply for a visa extension when you have 30 days or less remaining on your current visa exemption stamp, so it is possible to apply immediately. However, some locations may require you to wait until the final week before your current visa expires. It's best to check the specific rules at the immigration office in your area.

Depends on where you are so ask locally.

At most offices you can apply when you have 30 days or less left, which means you can apply immediately.

A few offices like Koh Samui, Jomtien and Koh Phagnan require you to be in the final week of your existing stamp before they'll allow you to apply for a tourist extension.
