I went to deposit cash -Thai baht- into a CDM with Bangkok Bank into my account and they charged me a fee. They charged me money to give them my money... into their bank.

Is this normal? Do all banks in Thailand do this? It makes no sense to me. TiT?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original question discusses the frustration of being charged a fee for depositing cash into a bank account at Bangkok Bank, questioning the norm of such practices in Thailand. Many commenters agree that this is a common occurrence across various banks in Thailand, particularly when transactions occur outside the registered province of the bank account, leading to service fees ranging from 12 to 20 THB. Some users noted that using ATMs or cash deposit machines (CDMs) in different provinces usually incurs charges, but pointed out alternatives, such as free withdrawals through banking apps. Overall, these fees are seen as a frustrating aspect of banking in Thailand, often prompting discussions about global banking practices.

Use the machine outside to deposit cash they don't charge you for that. Soon as you go inside they'll charge you

in my post I mentioned CDM is a cash deposit machine. I was using the machine. When I asked them they said if I were to do it face to face it would cost even more.

my wife was in the banking sector, if you use a CDM in another province even if it is your own bank there will be a charge too she informed me. This place is rock and roll... 😂

If you don't deposit at your local bank or make withdrawals, you will be charged for fees. For me it was 20 baht at Kasikorn.

It was my local bank. My only bank. My own bank charged me money to give them money.

It was in the same branch, you opened that account?

In many European countries it's the same. You pay if you want to deposit cash and you pay for getting cash from an ATM.

Who has to pay for this? Putting an ATM somewhere, filling it with cash money every couple of days... Someone has to pay for this.

Do you have any idea how much banks make off your money just sitting there in their account? We should not pay for anything. We are allowing them to hold our money
Dimitri ********
@Jack ********
Last years there were many banks not making money but losing money. With the negative interest rate in the EU they only lost money when you had money in your account. And the more money you had there, the bigger their loss.

A similar thing happened to me at a shopping mall car park recently - I tried explaining to the cashier that it's my car but she still charged me - maybe a language barrier issue.

It used to be when you used a KBank ATM up country, say you took out 2,000 baht they would debit your account for 2,015 baht not a separate line item for the fee. A nice little unaccounted-for scam.
Carlos *********
You can only deposit or withdraw from the exact bank you opened the account. All others will charge a fee

not true, no ATM fees within your home province

Bangkok Bank especially, charge for almost everything

bangkok bank is the best. I had no issue, they even pay some interest. Monthly fee only 30 bath. I think it’s better then use your bank and pay 220 bath fee every time you using it

stop talking nonsense. I get 5.5% in Australia interest. Look it up, ING savings maximiser, Now tell me how much interest Thai banks pay for a standard account? Then you will have the answer. And as you should know we in Australia do not pay anything for ATM cards and I don't pay for cash deposits either. So how is it that we have zero fees and Thailand has many fees? Just asking for a friend.

I don't know where you're from but banks make money by holding onto your money and investing them in the market. They use the big pool of deposited money to make money in the market. They also make money on overdraft fees and mistakes made by the clients. They want you to deposit money. They would never charge you to deposit money into their bank. Where are you from where this is the normal for you to expect a fee to deposit money?
Durrant ********
@Jack ********
like I said banking is a business and if you dont like the way they run it dont bank there. You want your cake and eat it too.

geez. Shouldn't have to pay to deposit money. He's not whining, he believes as I do that you should not have to pay a fee to deposit money into you own account. Regardless of the city or province it should be free.

But to take money out of your banks ATM anywhere in the country use no card and no fees as long as you have internet banking it's free

Banks in Thailand make charges for cash deposit in CDM or withdrawal from CDM/ATM if you are in different province than your bank account branch, it's around 20 THB.If you want to send money to your account in other province you can use the help of your friend to make transfer from his Bank accouny via his bank app and it's free.

If you want to withdraw cash from your bank ATM/CDM in different province, then use your bank app to withdraw cash without using your physical debit card and it will be free withdrawal.

Where you in a different province? I deposited money at the counter into my account once in Chiang Mai (my account was opened in bkk) and they charged me a commission. I almost lost my mind, charging you money to give them money is fking insane to me.

That's likely to be the reason. Different regions are effectively different companies. Might be true quite widely in Asia. Certainly true in China as well as Thailand. Mystery probably solved. Only mystery to solve now Is CDM. Cadbury's Dairy Milk doesn't appear a good fit.
Terry ********
@Mark ********
it’s also true, or at least used to be true, in the USA. I once tried to do some banking in another state and was told it wasn’t possible. Same bank but different.
Jeffrey *********
@Mark ********
Bank branches in different provinces are definitely not different companies. Thailand has only one banking regulator, and there is no separate licensing by the provinces. The idiotic fees for transactions in other provinces are often listed on their fee schedules as "communication fees", and are an archaic leftover from the days - obviously long, long past - when they would have to send a telex to the account-holding branch to pass on the transaction information. This clearly makes no sense in the modern era, but they hang onto it because hey, why not make some extra money if you can?

Oh, and CDM is "cash deposit machine".
Mark *********
@Jeffrey ********
Note my use of the word "effectively". Of course they aren't separate companies. I am talking about management process.
Garrett ***********
@Mark ********
"Cash Deposit Machine" Some ATM's call themselves CDMs, no idea why. lol.
Mark *********
@Garrett **********
Bastards. To get us all excited that we might interact with that machine and out pops a Cadbury's Dairy Milk. Misrepresentation! False advertising!
