What are the experiences of opening a bank account in Thailand for expats on a retirement visa?

Just tried to open a Savings account with debit card at Bangkok Bank, Hua Hin. I’m on a Retirement Visa and was told upfront 5900 baht insurance 😳 (non negotiable) plus the usual card fee 400 baht and annual fees. I insisted I didn’t want insurance but no way out of it. No thank you! I’m off to Bangkok next week so will try there or maybe just try another bank. Does anyone have any recent positive experiences and with whom and where?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the author's frustrating experience while attempting to open a savings account at Bangkok Bank in Hua Hin for expats holding a retirement visa. The bank insisted on a non-negotiable insurance fee along with the usual card and annual fees, prompting the author to seek advice from the community for alternative options. Comments reveal a range of experiences, suggesting varying requirements across different banks such as Kasikorn and SCB, with many advising against compulsory insurance. There are suggestions for expats to try different branches or banks and seek assistance from Thai friends when facing language or negotiation barriers.

Well two banks later (SCB & Kasikorn) and I still can’t open one. No more hard sells on insurance but they have said I need a letter from Immigration for residency (or another form of photo ID), which I thought I might get away with ie. could just show proof of where I’m staying. Argh, problem is I’m travelling around a lot for the first 6 months!

you can only get a 'residence certificate' from immigration, in Bangkok, once you have completed your first 90 day report.

It's much easier to get one in Pattaya if travelling that way

I had that issue at Bangkok Bank in Pattaya. Its a scam of theirs. I refussed and went to Imigration for a residency certificate. Went back to the bank and the lady looked pissed but opened my account. But I am here on a retirement visa.

Depends on your age. I had that once. I said go ahead and they went through all the opening paperwork etc and at the last screen it told them I was too old for their insurance!!! Still got the account though 555

When they asked me to buy insurance, I laughed and asked them, “why would I buy insurance when I already had insurance as a condition of my visa”?

When they were unable to answer, they gave up on the so called “requirement”.

Bangkok bank, head office branch. Opened an account in Oct 21 on a tourist visa. You will need to obtain an Embassy certified copy of your passport and your TM30 receipt. To get the passport copy, you'll most probably need to make an appointment at your Embassy. No insurance required, I only deposited 500thb to open the account. Plenty of English speaking staff.

maybe not, I was preparing to apply for a retirement visa, the following month and needed an account to transfer funds into.

If you are doing 90 day reports, you can obtain a residence certificate from immigration, the bank's alternative requirement to prove your ID and address

An dubious Employee of this nature looking for his own benefit at the banks expense is on the long run costing the bank big money. Gathering some evidence and reporting it to Head Office via email would be a good way to make sure this staff gets dealt with properly.

the insurance is not mandatory with the bank, that is just a branch that requires it to extract extra money from you. Try another branch and you will be fine

I opened an account with SCB in Hua Hin about 12 yrs ago. Opened a 2nd account at same branch 2 yrs ago. They asked if I wanted insurance and I said (politely) no thanks and opened an account no problem. Just had to deposit 1000 THB and show passport and rental agreement.

David MacFadyen. Very similar to my experience with both SCB and Bangkok Bank. Australian passport (they did not require any certification from embassy) and a current lease. Yes, both attempted the insurance sell, I declined, and they let it drop. SCB wanted 1000 baht, Bangkok Bank happy with 500. I'm surprised people experience so much difficulty. For info of others, SCB account opened at On Nut, Bangkok Bank at Central Bang Na.

My husband was able to open an account with Kasikorn at Bluport. Had to insist a little bit and begged them to help so they called the manager. A quick call with THE big boss and it should work. If the staff is hesitant just ask them if there is anyone you can talk to. A Thai contact will definitely help you get there without struggling too much. Good luck !

There will be Bangkok Bank branches that don't insist on this useless insurance, I found one in Chaing Mai, also easy to open Kasikorn bank account as I now have both, but Bangkok Bank better for doing retirement visas for some reason 😳🙄🤠

We've been banking with Kasikorn (green bank) for 6 years now. No problems.

We have friends with Krungsri (yellow bank), and they like it. I don't remember if we had to get compulsory insurance or not, we were just excited to have found a bank that didn't give us the runaround, like Bangkok bank did. It was awful.

** Always remember, with any of these banks, you must ASK for internet banking!

I am with Bangkok Bank as well as this is correct 100%... Charge for a Debit Card is only 100 Bahts. This is why they call it Amazing Thailand ;o) I am here in Hua Hin as well, so it would be helpful to know which Branch you had this kind of dubious dealings with? I would strongly recommend gathering as much evidence and making an official report to Bangkok Bank Head Office via email. If there is an option to keep your Complaint/ Report Anonymous while keeping the channels of communication open, I would do so. Please share which Branch in Hua Hin which you had these kind of dealings with... Thanks!
