Hi guys šŸ™‚, I am a British citizen and would like to transfer a large sum of money into a Thai bank account from a UK bank, before I go to the bank and ask direct I was just curious if any body has any information in regards to transfer fees typically in Thailand ? Do Thai banks charge a ā€œlanding feeā€ or is it a percentage based on how much your transferring..? Any positive advise would be much appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A British citizen is inquiring about transferring a large sum of money to a Thai bank, seeking information on typical fees charged by Thai banks. Users suggest that there are usually percentage-based fees involved, with some advocating for services like Wise for smaller amounts.<br>For large sums, SWIFT transfers are recommended as they can be cheaper, despite some concerns raised about their overall cost compared to Wise. Bangkok Bank reportedly charges a flat 'landing fee' of between 200-500 THB for incoming transfers. Several users caution that bank transfers can be subject to additional fees and recommend exploring different transfer options and comparing rates to find the most cost-effective solution.

Auto convert within Wise - Ā£10.94 on Ā£2000

Spend THB with Wise card: free

Transfer Wise THB balance to Bangkok Bank: 31.70 Baht (79p) per trx, any amount

Convert and transfer: sum of above (eg Ā£2000 => ie, 10.94 + 0.79)

So rarely any reason to just convert - you may as well set up an automated transaction a percent or two better than the current rate, depending on how much of a rush you're in, turn your phone off and forget about it, and Wise will snipe the better rate whenever a peak comes along.

Global Reach (a dedicated broker) just gave me a quote, Ā£20k 6th Dec 5pm gmt+7, 42.59 no fees, so 851,800 (haven't clarified but assume 500 Baht receiving fee would also apply when they SWIFT THB to Bangkok Bank)

Interbank rate, at time 42.7467 (I miss this rate!)

Bangkok bank TT buy at time 42.
*****
, net 845,950 Baht

Wise at time 42.7570, Ā£110 fee (0.5%), net 850,430 Baht

Currency club 849,867

Currency fair 851,923 (assume receiving charge of 500 Baht to come off too)

Remitly is good if you're American.

Looked into a few others, including moneygram and XE, nothing comes close to these. monito.com gives you some quotes.

Alternative currency brokers much like Global Reach are Currencies Direct, TorFX and Moneycorp (but they refused to give me a spot rate without passing all the 'know your client' checks).

So Global Reach better than Wise but only by 900 Baht / 0.1%. They could probably push things though - this was just a spot rate reluctantly shared.

Currency Fair was better than Wise by 1,100 Baht / 0.13%. EDIT: Checked again a few weeks later, once amid a sinking market and once amid a strengthening rate, and on both occasions CurrencyFair was worse than Wise. I also tried CurrencyFair, and after conversion, had a week of paperwork proving source of funds before they'd release my converted funds, by which time I'd lost a fair bit on the rate and had to send money by another means. (My money was from savings, so I couldn't provide a wage slip.) They threatened to keep the money if I couldn't provide a wage slip, got it in the end by sending statements from 4 banks. Wise always easy.

On CurrencyFair and Wise, you can put a limit order, or automated transaction, that triggers if a rate reaches a given level. These need time and care, but are great for grabbing a rate that is only available briefly due to a momentary spike. With Wise, they leave a THB balance in Wise, which can be spent on the card absolutely free, or transferred to a Thai bank for 32 Baht (fixed charge, regardless of amount).

Santander Zero claims to be a zero fee card, but actually adds a 0.83% margin to the Mastercard rate, which already has a 1-2% margin on GBP.

Halifax is genuinely a zero fee card, gives you the Mastercard rate, but as mentioned that currently includes 1-2% for GBP.

The Visa rate is best, adds just 0.3% to the ECB interbank rate, which is what Wise gives. So spending on card too, Wise comes out a percent or two better than even fee free Mastercards. EDIT: MasterCard were adding a percent or two margin, just to GBP, probably due to the recent chaos in the UK. Visa and MasterCard are now competitive with each other, and it varies by day which edges ahead. So worth checking MasterCard and Visa rates on the day.

MasterCard rates:
*****************************************************************************

Visa rates:
************************************************************************************

These are apparently the ATM limits:

Citi: THB 50,000, so THB 220 is 0.44% (plus MC 1%)

Krungsri: THB 30,000, so 220 is 0.73%

Bangkok Bank: THB 25,000, 0.88%

Krungthai: THB 25,000; (max 50,000 p/day)

SCB: THB 20,000, 1.1%

But if you're withdrawing money on a card, far better to go into the bank if you've time and do it over the counter. That way you are not subject to your card daily ATM limits, the Thai bank's transaction limits or the ridiculous 220 Baht fee.

*****************************************

If you use this to open your Wise account, you get fee free transfers for your first Ā£500. If I get three people to transfer Ā£200+ in one go, I get Ā£50.

Figured I may as well do it once and for all.

When I brought over large sums of money I used Bangkok bank the charges were Ā£15 per transaction which was ok considering I was sending a few million bahts worth at the time.

Wise has a limit on the amount you can transfer so not great for larger sums.

I used Wise transferred quite large amountals to buy the houses in Thailand the fees were cheaper than other companies ( I used the option transfer money from my UK bank to Wise as it was the cheapest fee ) šŸ™‚
Ƙyvind *********
The cheapest and fastest is Wise, but you might have problems with really large amounts. You should also be aware that if the money you transfer is to purchase a condo, you will need a letter from the bank to prove that the money came from your own account. In this case you should only use Bangkok bank, and you should transfer the excact same amount as the contract says, it have to be from your own account, and in the comment when you transfer you should write Ā«payment forĀ» -and then the full adress. They will not let you registrate the deed in your name if not.

I use K-bank every day, and I use Wise to transfer normal amounts, but I also have an account in Bangkok bank just for this purpose. Bangkok bank donā€™t take any considerable amount, but your bank that you transfer from is likely to take around 4% higher exchange rate on top of the fee, probably around 20-30 euro. So the higher exchange rate is your real cost. Wise only takes around 1,5% and a smaller fee, too.

The fastest and easiest way is to transfer it into a cryptocurrency and, once you get into Thailand, cash it out into Thai baht.
Robert ************
Of course I have a Thai Bank Acct. But the rest sounds anything but "easy". e.g. P2P Swaps??? Why mention using "Crypto" in your Post, if you don't want to explain how. šŸ˜
Tom *******
@Robert ***********
hmmā€¦ I gave you a suggestion because you wanted one. Not a millennial by any chance, are you? Expect everything to be done for you? Get lost. And DYOR.
Robert ************
@Tom ******
No, actually I did NOT ask for a "suggestion" from you. You posted your "suggestion" in reply to the OP/Author. And, I replied to that: "Can you kindly PM me (or Post) detailed Instructions on how to do the Crypto transfer method?". So, I reiterate, don't bother Posting any "suggestions", if you aren't willing to provide details. Otherwise, your suggestions -- and YOU -- are worthless. Other posters, like myself, try our best to actually be helpful to folks who have questions.

@Robert ***********
I canā€™t help it if youre a Luddite when it comes to cryptos. Iā€™m almost 60 and know my way around. Perhaps itā€™s tiime you caught up by actually doing your own work? Doing your own research? Instead of dissing someone who steered you in the right direction. Now bugger off mate. Not wasting any more time with a lazyass, lame and rude git.
Robert ************
@Tom ******
Wow, you definitely have a serious problem. You call me rude and "dissing". Talk about the Pot calling the Kettle Black. And, FYI, I have a Crypto Wallet, and have bought and sold Crypto. Just never used it to transfer assets to a Thailand Bank. As I said above, DON'T BOTHER posting your time-wasting "suggestions", if you aren't willing to expound upon it. Just stay off the Group. You are one big Arse.
Tom *******
@Robert ***********
dude, you just canā€™t give it up, can you? If you had just used 10% of the time youā€™ve wasted prolonging this asinine exchange, you wouldā€™ve already transferred and received the money in Thailand by now. What an absolute cockwomble. Youā€™re one of the reasons I donā€™t spend a lot of time on social media nowadays. Too many asswipes expecting you to do their work for them and getting offended when you donā€™t. Now bugger off.
Robert ************
@Tom ******
Funny, for a guy that doesn't want to waste time on Social Media, you just keep doing it. fyi, I don't need to exchange any money at this time. Was just gathering info. (i.e. doing my "Research", for possible future needs, and to pass along to others. But obviously, being helpful to others isn't something you would understand. So YOU BUGGER OFF, because you definitely aren't going to get the Last Word here:

Can you kindly PM me (or Post) detailed Instructions on how to do the Crypto transfer method?

Sorry but Iā€™m afraid youā€™ll have to do the research yourself. I would start by getting an account set up with OKX crypto exchange

and thru P2P swaps, you can have money sent into Thai baht directly via a stablecoin like USDT e.g. the stablecoin called Tether. Itā€™s really very easy but youā€™ll need a Thai bank account or know someone you trust to receive the money on your behalf. Good luck.
John ***********
@Robert ***********
you really trust the volatility. If that is your game, go for it, if its money you have to have, look into insured transfers.
Tom *******
@John **********
There is little to no volatility in stablecoins, hence their name. Thatā€™s because they are pegged to national currencies like the US dollar, the British pound and the Euro etc.

Download WISE app, sign up for an account, wise is used by a lot of expats in Thailand to send money from their home country into Thailand, suggest starting off with a couple of small transfers so you get used to it, majority of transfers are completed in mere seconds (less than 1 minute) however large transfers can take 1 or 2 days, some ppl can advise on their personal experience with large transfer amount they will usually take 1 or 2 days.

I usually transfer above $35,000 baht every 2 weeks with no issues, transfer is in seconds, If I transfer a large amount I usually do a few small transfers keeping them all under 50,000 baht.

If you use wise etc you can only transfer more than 50,000 baht to Kasikorn and Bangkok Bank. Any other bank will send it back. Bank to bank for other banks, be careful

OK OK OK, I see what you and Sean mean. But his and your wording are both ambiguous: "If you use wise etc you can only transfer more than 50,000 baht to Kasikorn and Bangkok Bank". And I think that u have since edited your post to clarify it: "(or less of course)", or maybe I missed it. My post was also wrong: "I think u mean less than

No Terry, Sean is correct. You can only transfer more than Bt 50k to 3 banks; Bangkok, Kasikorn & SCB if you wish (or less of course), the other banks are limited to a max of Bt49,999 per transaction.
Terry ********
@Dave ********
Sorry Dave but that is rubbish and he has acknowledged that it is wrong. I have been with Kasikorn bank and (Transfer)wise for years and nearly always send Ā£1k which has been less than 50k thb for years too! My last transfer was yesterday. Here are my last 3 transfers: Transactions

Sent Ā· Yesterday

41,501.72 THB

1,000 GBP

Sent Ā· 13th Jan

40,064.55 THB

1,000 GBP

Sent Ā· 13th Jan

40,108.27 THB

1,000 GBP
Dave *********
@Terry *******
:) It's not rubbish. What he is saying is you can only transfer 50k plus to three Thai banks. The other banks cannot accept more than 49,999. That rule came in some time ago. There's nothing stopping you sending less than 50k to any bank. So as your last 3 transactions to Kasikorn were less than 50k obviously they went through as they would with any bank. If you try to send more the 50k to a bank other than the 3 listed the transaction won't go through. Wise states this if you Google it.

Register with WISE and then you can either transfer the money with the best available rates to pretty much any bank account worldwide or, also interesting, hold the money in different currencies in the so called: "borderless" or "multicurrency" account and then withdraw with their card in local currencies, wherever you travel. If you use my referral link, the first transfer up to 600 USD is free for you. Anyone else is also invited to use the link of course, for a free first transfer and cheap rates afterwards:

Incorrect, Wise has the best rate, including for large sums, unless you want to spend time working with a foreign exchange agent.

I understand what you're saying, but you are mistaken. I've checked in some detail - see below. You get, for example, Bangkok Bank's TT rate, which has more margin in it than Wise's commission.

for small amounts yes, under US$10,000, but over that on a single transaction SWIFT is much better, to a maximum fee of bt500, if you know what you're doing.

your joking of course. Do a comparison to Wise and you'll find it to be significantly more expensive to use the SWIFT system. I've done this myself and was shocked. That why XE and Wise have became so popular. We all once used the banking system.
Dimitri ********
@Glyn *********
You are wrong. It of course also depends on the bank and the exchange rate. But for large sums of money SWIFT is often better than Wise. With SWIFT you pay a fixed fee to transfer the money, with Wise you pay a percentage.

the fee isnt as important as the ex rate you get for a large sum

One advantage of Wise is that you can block the exchange rate when you order the transfer. You cannot do that with banks, they will just transfer at the rate current when they launch the process.

actually you can transfer your home currency from your home country into a Thai bank into a FCD account, foreign currency deposit account. I have mine with Bangkok Bank. By having this, and using SWIFT transfer, I can send dollars into that account, then exchange into baht at the TT rate at my convenience.

If you can confirm that when I send a large sum of money to a Thai bank account they do not charge a fee there side then this is a bonus, although I am expecting to be charged some sort of fee somewhere I just donā€™t want my pants pulled down if you get what I mean.. thanks šŸ™
