Thanks for the add - a Q for the Wise users here: So I transfer money from my foreign bank account into my THB Wise account, then if I use my Wise debit/visa card to withdraw funds at local ATMs is this subject to the typical 220 baht fee or not?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The question concerns whether withdrawing from a THB Wise account with a Wise debit card incurs the standard 220 baht ATM fee. The consensus from users indicates that this fee is applicable for foreign cards, and there are also additional limitations on monthly withdrawal amounts. Additionally, using a local Thai bank account is recommended for minimizing fees and enhancing banking convenience.

Yes . I heard that if you go into the branch and do the transaction with the staff they don't charge a fee. I only recently heard this and have no experience of asking , but it might be worth asking. šŸ™

If you're planning to stay for a while it will be worth getting a Bangkok bank account and transfering from Wise.

ATM has a charge for foreign accounts

Wise doesnā€™t really come alive until you link it to a Thai bank account. Sure, itā€™s useful without one, but opening a Thai account with an associated Visa/MC debit card and online ap is a complete game changer.

promise my last question about this - using Wise, is there any difference transfering money from my home country account to Thai accounts versus using Wise to first transfer from home country account into Wise Thai baht account, then transfering to other Thai accounts? Another way to look at it - what is the purpose/point of the Thai Baht account category within Wise other than using it for the credit card function?

I always first transfer from home bank to Wise and then from Wise to Bangkok Bank. Never tried skipping the intermediate step. ļæ¼

What's the advantage of using a Wise card linked to your Thai account? The Thai banks apps are great for paying by scan at most places and if not manual transfer. What's the advantage of using the Wise card?

Above I was talking about a Thai bank card, not the Wise card. I never use the Wise card for Thailand payments or purchases. But the Thai bank card gets used at Villa, Central Market, Lazada, etc.

I do use the Wise card sometimes to pay bills in the USA from my Wise balance.

But the number one usage I make of Wise is to move funds from my USA bank to Thai bank.

that's the reason I even got it. Now's a matter of time getting off my lazy ass and get that Thai acct (I need to wait for my Ed Visa or hunt down a branch that'll approve on a TV but not thrilled about that option)

all you have to do is go to immigration and ask for a letter to open a bank account. Then you take this letter to Krabi Bangkok branch along with your passport/visa and they will open an account for you.

Just go to a good agent with 3000-5000baht in hand, and literally a couple hours later youā€™ll be all set up with an account, debit card and online ap at a reputable bank like Bangkok Bank. A small price to pay for a lifestyle-changing improvement in how you deal with your finances. In Pattaya, Manareetā€™s in Soi 13-2 is hard to beat, but there are others.

I know this is a very controversial subject, so spare me the virtue-signaling outrage from the usual suspects. Yes itā€™s certainly possible to do it cheaper on your own, but it will likely cost you more than you expect in terms of time spent tracking down a branch and bank employee who will see you through to a successful conclusion. To each his own.

considering I've already atm withdrawn the max 5 times in less than a month I wish I heard this from the get go šŸ˜…

if you wait, make sure you ask your school to write you a letter to open a bank account. They should do it for free and the first bank I went to with the letter did it for me.

Never tried mine but its a foreign card so I would presume yes you would

I haven't either but seems pointless to even have a Thai baht account in Wise if you've got to pay the currency conversion then the ATM withdrawal fee
Brett **********
@Evan ******
not really as you can use it at places that take visa/MC with no additional fees and you'll have locked in the exchange rate thats good for you. Some banks charge foreign transaction fees when using their cards in any circumstances

okay that's great I was unclear about that matter as well, Wise Visa credit card usage if it was subject to more fees apart from the currency conversion.

@Evan ******
I only use wise to transfer to my thai account. If you use the card at tesco or big c for shopping there is no fee. All foreign travel cards get the fee not just wise

Yes it is and also you only can withdraw limited amounts from an ATM with Wise each month before they charge themselves
