Is it better to extend a tourist visa before it expires or wait until the last day?

Very quick one. My father's visiting from UK and arrived on a 60 day tourist visa in Nov 2023. He's now seeking to extend this in country for another 30 days.

His tourist visa expires this coming Sunday 7th Jan. Is it better he goes to Chaeng Wattana this Friday 5th Jan, or can he go Monday 8th Jan as the expiry date falls on the weekend?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around extending a 60-day tourist visa for a visitor from the UK, which is set to expire on January 7th. Community members advise going to the immigration office (Chaeng Wattana) as soon as possible, preferably before the expiration date on January 7, to avoid complications. Key points include that extensions can be applied for even before the current visa expires without losing any remaining days. Furthermore, if the visa expires over a weekend or holiday, the extension will still start from the original expiration date, with no fines for overstay if handled properly.

Go tomorrow. Don't risk it. You will only get to the same date anyway.

They asked for my T-M 30 so you should probably have that, and if you don’t have one go ASAP in case they turn you away and you need to get one

Also try to get an appointment. Maybe short notice but if you can and have all of your documents, it’s fast. In and out 15 minutes for me.

For the sake of 2 days just go before it expires. Common sense.

No need to wait till the current permission to stay expires, or is close to expiring. The 30 day extension will be added to it, so no days are lost by going early.

You can do either. If you go on the 5th he’ll get 30 days added on to the 7th.

If you go on Monday he’ll get an overstay stamp and a 29 day extension but no fine. Most don’t want an overstay stamp so probably best to go on Friday.

I'd send him BEFORE but that's just me

The RULE is if your stamp expires on a date the immigration office is closed (weekend or holiday) and you go the very next day they're open you can get your extension like normal and you will not be fined for overstay (you will get an overstay stamp in your passport saying overstay xxx days fine waived due to closure) and your extension will start from the date your stamp ran out
