I may arrive with a 90 days non-immigrant 0 visa (from the Thai Embassy) in Australia. My question is how many days after I should apply for a 1 year extension. Does immigration office keep the passport until it approves the extension? Is it possible, while waiting can I get back my passport and travel to Japan then come back to Thailand to wait for the result of my application for extension?
Answer summary
When arriving in Thailand on a 90-day Non-O visa, you can apply for a 1-year extension as soon as you have 30 days or less remaining on your visa. Ensure that you have at least 800,000 baht in your Thai bank account for at least 2 months prior to applying for the extension. Immigration typically does not keep your passport, allowing you to travel if you obtain a re-entry permit. It’s important to gather necessary documentation beforehand, and some immigration offices may require you to have a specific time remaining on your visa before applying for the extension.

You open a bank account ASAP and deposit your 400k (marriage) or 800k baht (retirement) with all the bank requirements satisfied to allow you to open an account. The money must mature in that account for 2 months prior to you applying for the 12 months extension. During this time you can buy a single or multiple re-entry permit from immigration to keep your 90 day non-o visa alive and return to Thailand on your current visa in time to apply for the extension.

As soon as you like but you get the full visa on arrival time period. They never keep your passport.

You cannot get an extension anytime, most Immigration Offices require you to have 30 days or less remaining on your entry stamp, some are 45 (and some just 7 for tourism extensions)

An Non-OA visa is a 12 month visa so I assume you actually have a 90 day Non-O visa. To apply for the 12 month extension of stay you must have a minimum of 800k baht in a Thai bank account in your name for at least 2 months before you can apply for the extension, so sort out your bank and transfer the funds while entered on the 90 day visa, get a re-entry permit and then you can leave as long as you are back in time to apply for the extension of stay before your visa expires. I'd make sure you leave a good few days as you'll need to collect up various things such as bank statements, letter from bank, photocopies and so on

thank you for your advice. I plan to deposit to my old SCB account 3 months before I apply for a 90 day single entry non O visa. Then apply for an extension, say after one month . How long does it take in Hua Hin? I believe immigration won't require a health insurance certificate . What are the documents immigration require apart from 800k . I am confused as Embassy website say 3 months but in Thailand they want 2 months. I can do 3 months before I fly.

if you already have a Thai bank account then you can deposit the funds whenever you want as long as they are in that account for 2 months before you apply for the extension of stay. However you can't apply for the extension until you are down to the last 30 days of the 90 day Non-O visa. Embassy and immigration requirements are not the same thing, and you won't need insurance

ok, got it. It is clear . Sorry my first post was mistakenly typed non OA it should be non O. I corrected it now. I can deposit the money anytime. Then 30 days prior to 90 days I can apply for an extension. My 90 days will be a single entry so after a month can I get re-entry to travel to Japan for one week then comeback to Thailand and wait for last 30 days. Do I need to prepare any other document before heading to Thailand?

Thai embassy in Australia requires funds deposited in the bank for 3 months prior issuing 90 days non O visa . I am in Australia. I can deposit 800,000 in my SCB account or Australian bank account. After I arrive in Thailand how many days after I need to apply for a one year extension, does immigration hold the passport? 90 days is a single entry.

Alex HH TH you cannot apply until your 800k is seasoned for 2 months and you have 30 days or less remaining on your entry stamp (45 days in some places). You usually keep your passport but some Offices hold it overnight.
