Wondering - if the retirement visa I am hoping comes through this week, at the end of it, or rather toward the end, can I easily switch to a marriage visa?

We have been married for fifteen years but lived mostly in Europe.

Is possible, would it be best to go through the procedure in Thailand before the retirement visa expires, or leave the country when it expires, request a 90 day non-O visa from abroad (showing a second bank account with 400,000 THB) and then returning back to Thailand to finalize the one year marriage visa.
Answer summary
The user is asking if they can switch from a retirement visa to a marriage visa after living in Thailand for some time. They have been married for fifteen years but primarily lived in Europe. Comments suggest it is indeed possible to switch from a retirement visa to a marriage visa, but it should be done within the timeframe of the retirement visa's validity. It's important to meet the financial requirements and have the necessary documents, such as an apostilled marriage certificate. Users recommend fulfilling the financial requirements for both visa types and highlight the process can vary based on the immigration office's specific rules.

Married in Bangkok, legaly, living with her in Japan for 20 years, my wife has her BKK Bank account, has had it since year 2000.

Apllied and got Non O visa (Kasikorn account too) and and 1 year extension, not a mention that I have ever been married to a Thai national. She does not exist in my approved extension.

I have switched from retirement to support of thai wife when the retirement ends. However, check your immigration office will allow it.

As a tatic you need to fullfill the money in the bank for your retirement visa

OP
Colin Chaffers Colin thanks but I don't quite understand "switched from retirement to support of thai wife when the retirement ends'. OK, I think I understand - the actual definition of a Thai marriage visa is always the head of the household who is considered as supporting the wife, which is why women married to Thai men apparently need no particular proof of finances

Ronn Aldaman No Thai man is ever to be mentioned even if one exists. You would not get in a marriage if that was the case.

Ronn Aldaman Colin Chafers forgot a few important words: He should have written ""switched from the 1-year Extension based on retirement to the 1-year Extension based on MARRIED to a Thai wife when the 1-year RETIREMENT EXTENSION was near its expiry' . . Normally you have to wait for the last 30 days of the 1-year extension if you want to change the REASON of theextension from retirement to marriage

Why have you applied for a retirement visa if you want an extension based on marriage? Why not just apply for the Non-O based on marriage from the outset?

Generally the first extension of stay (which is not a visa) should be obtained for the reason the visa was issued, if the visa doesn't state the reason you might get away with it.

Whichever reason you will extend for requires the appropriate funds in a Thai bank for 2 months before you apply for the extension, 800k for retirement, 400k for marriage.

If you were married outside of Thailand you should also get your marriage certificate apostilled by the authorities where you were married and approved by the Thai embassy in that country. You may also need it to be translated.

Thanks, well, we had little choice as we returned to Thailand after a lengthy absence without realizing the new regulations and rules. So basically went through an agent and want to get out of the retirement thing.

We got married in Thailand fifteen years ago, and I had a marriage vise for seven, then we went to work in Europe - got here a few weeks ago and couldn't find a single bank that would open an account for me.

So had to circumvent some hurdles.
