TLDR : Answer Summary
The ease of obtaining a marriage visa in Thailand for those married to a Thai national can vary based on several factors. It is generally considered manageable if you have the correct documentation. To apply for a marriage visa extension, you can start with a 90-day Non-O visa, opening a Thai bank account and depositing 400,000 baht, which needs to be frozen for a minimum of two months prior to application. If you were not married in Thailand, you may need to get your marriage certificate translated into Thai. Some users reported additional complexities with the application process, such as issues regarding documents and possible delays, but overall, it can be done successfully with proper preparation.

I shopped around for a visa agent to handle my marriage visa. They were asking 50-65,000 baht. For a retirement visa it's only 15,000. That is about how much more of a pain in the neck the marriage visa is. It's fine if its a legitimate marriage and you have no other options. I think a lot of people who do have other options pursue the other options over the marriage visa.

The Non Imm O is the marriage visa, you can apply for the 1year extention of stay based on marriage when you have 30 days left on the visa. You'll need 400k Thai Baht seasoned for 2 months in your Thai bank account prior to your application

You will have to get married again at the local marriage office, unless you already have a marriage certificate in your country then you just need to get it translated into Thai

Why did you not get your Non-O for marriage (I assume it is for retired/over 50)?

, I was only in country for 3 weeks and with the earliest wedding date being 3 days before I had to return to UK - tried to apply for marriage visa while in UK and the online system kept coming back with complicated documents.

See the document checklist below. If you have all the documents it is not that complicated.

Upon arrival, use 90 day Non-O to open bank account and deposit 400,000 baht. The amount need to be freeze for at least 2 months prior to your visa extension. That's the fastest way. Otherwise you might have to do 60-day family visit extension first to wait for bank account to reach 2 month, then only you can go for 1-year.

Good luck.

ok then you don’t need to worry about getting the certificate “notarised”

Visit your local immigration and ask for the handout of exactly what you’ll need. Each office may have slightly different requirements.
