How do I handle the request to cancel my Tourist Visa while applying for a DTV in Thailand?

Dec 16, 2024
Hi all... I arrived in Thailand in July on a Tourist TR six-month multi-entry visa (DTV wasn't yet available). I just flew to Penang to apply for my DTV. I was asked for additional documents which I provided. I now have this request, which I assume is asking me to cancel my Tourist Visa and upload proof...

Other request documents: Please cancel your previous visa no. Fxxxxxx

I've logged into the E-Visa portal and there is no obvious option to cancel - it expires on Jan 10. Any ideas on what to do?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is seeking advice on how to handle a request from the Thai E-Visa to cancel their existing six-month multiple entry Tourist Visa (METV) while applying for a new Digital Tourist Visa (DTV) after a trip to Penang. They are unsure how to cancel the Tourist Visa since there is no clear option in the E-Visa portal and it remains valid until January 10. Comments suggest waiting until the METV expires as it cannot be canceled and that the user should communicate with the E-Visa about the situation.

They don’t know what they’re talking about. You can’t cancel a visa. Reply to the email telling them you’ve done it, see what happens.

hi... Penang referenced my METV number. I applied for the METV in London. How did Penang know the number? They know more than we think 😉

Anonymous participant They may know more than we think, but they certainly don’t know that visas can’t be cancelled otherwise they wouldn’t have asked you to do that.

What they’re asking is impossible.

Thanks all for your help. Perhaps I'm just unlucky with Penang. Even if I waited for the final days before I applied, the visa would've still been valid. Surely I'm not the first person to have a valid visa while applying for the next one. Was I supposed to wait until the last day on the visa, fly out, and then apply for the DTV the next day? I've not read anyone here having to do that before - seems very strange.

Anonymous participant I did that. I had a non-b with multi re-entry that I didn't want to cancel in thailand as I should have. I left a day before and let it lapse on it's own. Then applied for the DTV. This had me concerned but I got the dtv and re-entered yesterday. I don't see why it is strange to finish one visa before applying for a new one

Anonymous participant because you have a multi entry. If it's not multi entry it cancels itself when you leave. You should have asked at immagration or here before you left. But hey come back and go on the 10 Jan all good

Good point. I could just leave my application pending and wait. Nothing to lose but waiting. Best case it's approved after the 10th, or I have to apply again.

You either don't return to Thailand till after the 10th, or return to Thailand and leave after the 10th or return and leave and don't return till after the 10th, or go to a consulate after the 10th.

Sadly you cannot cancel the METV multiple entry tourist visa. It's valid for 6 months from its date of issue.

And its a multiple entry visa.

When does the METV visa sticker pasted in your passport show its ending date?

Wait until 10 January is what l would have done because it's a multi entry it is still valid. You could have cancelled it before you left

how could I have cancelled before I left? How is that done? If I cancelled before I left then I'm in the country without a valid visa.

cannot be cancelled. Yes, he should have waited until it expired before applying for the DTV Visa.

Let's Ask
@Tod ********
if he knows a way to cancel an active multiple entry visa. I don't think it can be cancelled. BUT Tod is the expert.
