Has anyone had the DTV first, then a work permit visa here for Thailand, then got off of the work permit? Can I still use my original DTV visa or do I have to apply for a brand new one again?
Sorry if this has been asked before and thanks in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
When transitioning from a DTV visa to a work permit in Thailand, it is essential to understand that you cannot hold two valid visas simultaneously. Once you received the work permit, your DTV visa would have been automatically cancelled. To return to using a DTV visa after the work permit, you must apply for a new DTV visa. It's advisable to clearly explain your situation in your application to ease the processing, especially since switching visas frequently can raise questions.
I am 86 years old and have a DVT Medical Wellness visa. I applied for it myself 10 days ago. I sent all the documents requested by the embassy (20 pages), including my hospital appointment in April 2026. I am now waiting for a decision; if it's not approved, no problem. My plan B is visa-free entry every four months, a 21-day stay in Thailand for my health update, and then departure. I would also enter similarly with a DVT visa, but definitely not for a long-term stay of 180 days.
You have to apply for a new dtv. You can cancel the old visa and work permit which is usually done by the employer when your contract is up . Another way is just leave thailand your non b without re entry permit will be cancelled. Then where ever you go apply for dtv
So when you moved to the visa that supported the work permit, the dtv should have been cancelled.
The only place that can cancel a visa (legally) is the issuing office / embassy.
My sense is despite this being law, it frequently isn't done. I know when I moved from a dtv to another class the boi cancelled my permission of stay, but I suspect just did nothing about the visa.
This then creates a legal mess. I would not try to reuse an old dtv as it could result in the cancelling of the permission of stay, and put you into an accidental overstay, with the possible blacklisting that can come from that. I know that sounds like scaremongering but the possibility exists.
Okay I will try to apply for a new DTV! Ive heard some agencies said if I switch visas often it might be an issue. I'm American, I got my first DTV visa back in October 2024 from Taiwan, and had my work permit/visa from July 2025. Do you think it would be a problem to apply again? And should I go to a different country or keep to the same?
You can't get a work permit on a DTV. If you got one, it means you got another visa. If you got another visa, the DTV would be void as you can't hold two valid visas at the same time.
a Work Permit is a permit from the Ministry of Labour that allows you to work as described, employer, place of work and work description
IT does not let you stay in Thailand.
NEXT to this Work Permit you need a legal stay in Thailand, a visa or extension of stay which allows you to work in combination with that work permit.
Most used the Non Immigrant B visa.
As you can only have 1 valid visa for Thailand at the time, you cancel your DTV, apply for a Non Immigrant B visa and work permit, when both in your pocket you can start work,
When you stop work you cancel the work permit and visa at the location where you got them issued, leave the country and apply for a NEW DTV.
Anonymous participant I’m not exactly sure about the procedure to cancel the DTV, but you could ask an immigration office. I’ve read some posts about it, but I’ve never seen anyone successfully switch from a DTV to another visa. Some were told to contact the embassy where the DTV was issued.
