So I will pick up my new passport at German embassy on Thursday, 21st. Where do I have to go to get my visa transferred from the old one? Chaengwattana? And I guess it's possible to do a visa extension (at the moment I'm on SETV because lawyer fucked up my non-b documents), there after everything is transferred, too, right?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about the process of transferring their visa from an old passport to a new one at Chaengwattana and whether they can also extend their visa at the same time. Comments suggest that while typically visas cannot be transferred, it is possible to apply for a visa extension by presenting both passports and relevant documents from the embassy.

Just to give an update: It did actually take me only 40mins to get from Sathorn to Chaengwattana with a taxi. Over there I had to fill out the visa transfer form & the visa extension form at the same time (only one queue no.) but the process was separated. They did actually transfer the visa and I got a tourist visa stamp in my new passport with the regular "admitted until" date and afterwards stamped the extension with the new "admitted until" date. Whole process took maybe an hour as I got there quite late, a little after 3pm (Picking up passport took much longer than I expected).

The way back to central Bangkok was 2,5 hours in a taxi though. Fun. Not. 🤣

glad that worked out for you.

@Ju***
, you should have enough time, but remember they stop giving out queue numbers at 15:30 out at Chaengwattana and they close at 16:30

@Joseph *******
no, nothing to do which visa you have or use. It is a standard Immigration requirement.

I do think being on o-visas for such a long time now works in your favour sure if I was on tourist visa may have been a different story but you got to get lucky sometimes

@Joseph *******
you were lucky to get away without letter.

There very good at Mukdahan they use a bit of common sense there I was annoyed with embassy for misinformation

@Joseph *******
quite lucky, I have seen immigration offices send people back to the consulate to get the letter before they'd transfer the stamps.
Joseph ********
They did ask for receipt of new passport which I did not have due to misinformation from Australian embassy
Joseph ********
Transfered old passport number and visa details and tak re-entry stamp into new passport before I crossed from Mukdahan

@Jos***
, what were you "transferring" ?

They never transfer visas to a new passport, only extensions of stays and re-entry permits.

thank you!

if you are on a valid multi-entry VISA (not an extension of stay) you have to travel with BOTH passports until the visa in the old passport runs out. All they can do is stamp you in and out on the new passport.
Dori *******
What if you are on a multiple entry visa and there is 4 month left on it.. can they transfer that too or would I loose some month. I am due to get a new passport in November.

I just did my transfer at a border crossing only had old passport and new one had no letters from embassy had no problems

Yes. So even if it takes double time from what google says, I should still be fine getting a number at around 15:00. I wanna book a flight back at 8am next morning, that's why I need to make sure to get it done same day after picking up the passport. If anything goes wrong I can still do the whole process in Samui though I guess.

They can not transfer a Visa to a new passport. Go to Chaenwattana and apply for the extension, bring both passports and the letter from your Embassy and they will put your new admitted to stay date in your new passport.

Julia this is commonly called a "visa transfer" but technically it may be more properly called a "permission to stay transfer". It's the same thing your embassy is referring to as a "visa transfer".

The point is you need to just bring both passports to immigration and they transfer your existing permission to stay, plus put a stamp in your new passport with details from your old passport. They need this letter now also, they didn't when I last did it in 2014 but they do now.

You can do an extension immediately after the transfer. I can't remember if I was able to put in the forms for both at the same time, or whether I had to do them sequentially (i.e. wait for the passport with the transferred stamp back), Tod might know. But I did both in the same visit.

The letter is for immigration I've been told and I had to pay 25€ for it. They said to transfer visa but I guess it's just like Robert said and what matters is the stamp (in my case) as my setv is used anyway.

When I got my new Passport, the embassy gave me back my old, devaluated Passport (apart from those pages who still had a valid visa in it, like my Thai Non-b and my USA) and some letter I did not specifically asked for.

On my next Visa visa run a few weeks later, I gave Immigration in Sadao both my Passports and that letter. The officer passed my documents to a girl in the next boot who put a transfer stamp on the first page of it

Only problem I had, after the girl stamped my passport I was of to Malaysia only to be sent back as she didn't stamp me out of the country.

No Chance. 25km in 34 min. This is Bangkok.

Maybe 1hr is a good time.

I have no idea about distance and traffic jams in Bangkok, I'm living about 800 Km south of it, nice and quiet.

I see. That actually makes things even easier. Thanks for your help! Do you think I have enough time to go to Chaengwattana if I leave German embassy around 14:00? According to googlemaps that should work:

It is not possible to transfer the Visa sticker from your old passport to a new passport without damaging the old one and use glue or staples to attach it into the new one. Immigration will put a new admitted to stay stamp into your new passport with your original date or if you directly apply for an Extension of Stay with a new date. The visa sticker is used and does not have any benefit anymore.

? I paid the embassy 25€ for a document they say is necessary to have the visa transferred. I mean I could technically already be on an extension of stay and in that case couldn't apply for another one.

So you say only do extension of stay and that's it?
