How can I transfer my Non O visa extension for education between provinces in Thailand?

Hi all, I hope I can get some help here. I'm currently in Chiang Mai, entered the country 2 years ago on a Non O, then signed up for 1 yr Thai language course and got an extension based on education.

I have been accepted into another edu program in Bangkok and will need to either cancel or transfer my current extension to the new school. I understand if I cancel I have 7 days to acquire the new extension, or transfer it, if that is even possible.

My understanding is that I have to cancel in CM, then rush down and collect new paperwork and immediately go to the local immigration office and apply for the new, all within 7 days. This is a tight timeline and neither school is really providing much help.

Anyone ever change schools on an extension based on EDU in another province?

Thanks in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks advice on transferring their Non O visa extension due to a change in educational programs from Chiang Mai to Bangkok. They express concern about the tight timeline, needing to cancel their current extension and apply for a new one quickly. Comments clarify that while cancelling the extension can be done, the individual may face a same-day deadline to leave Thailand or apply for a new extension, emphasizing the importance of having the correct documentation from the new school.

You can cancel in Bangkok. But they will want proof from your school possibly. I cancelled my non-b in another province. Then applied for a new visa the same day.

That you did it is great for you,

but boy that's not a course of action I'd EVER recommend someone trying ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ™

The rule is clear, you cancel the extension at the office where it was issued.

Last thing he needs to do is come down here have them DENY cancelling it and then have to slog all the way back up there to cancel it and then down again.

Tod mentioned that I cancel it in CM using a letter from the current school stating when I will complete courses with them, in advance. Then they will stamp my passport with a temporary stamp in order to give me time to get the new visa in Bangkok. I believe this is the case and makes the most sesne

Just so you're clear
@Brian *********
you can go at most offices about 2 weeks earlier than the date on your stop study paper and cancel the extension

Then when you get down here you will NOT be applying for any visa. you'll be applying for another extension of stay stamp like you have in your passport now.

Id like to ask my school for a letter with a few months of leeway, maybe they wont issue a letter until closer to the stop study date. idk

if you're starting at the new place at the begining of Jan you need to cancel that extension up there by Christmas with like a jan 10th date or something that will give you time to get down here, get the documents and go apply.

You're going to have to coordinate with BOTH places or you're not gonna pull it off and you'll run off the rails

yes that makes sense. Just curious if I tell them Ill finsih with them end of Jan or end of Feb even, have it cancelled prior to Jan, but giving myself a bit more time just in case. It would be cancelled but with a longer period, maybe there is a standard timeframe allowed? 2 weeks?

you can only cancel an extension up to 2 weeks early <- so you can't have a termination date a month out

Fair enough. It was an accident on my part, I didn't intend on cancelling in CM. But the option came up at immigration

I do not believe Bangkok allows people to cancel extension of stays that were not issue at their immigration office.

As you are working at "flying squirrel", why not apply for a Non-B and a work permit ?

A bit of additional info.

When you cancel your extension, then apply for another extension for whatever reason you don't meet the requirement, you will be stamped for 7days application-denied-and-leave-the-country (This is the part OP was misinformed, I guess). You would have extra 7days, but this 7days is considered as a NOT extension. You can not apply for further extension without being on a valid extension (or entry stamp) when you apply. If I remember right, Bangkok is strict about this.

I think you have your wires crossed some. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

You can get documentation from your current school stating you want to cancel the extension you're on a couple weeks early and go have the extension cancelled at the immigration office.

They'll cancel it and give you a stamp that lets you stay until the date you had on the stopping studying paperwork from the school,

THEN during that time you get documentation from the new place, go to the immigration office in that area and apply for a new extension.

Totally CAN be done, BUT whether you can or can't do it is gonna hinge on the documentation from the new school and the immigration office you're dealing with to get the new extension.

>I understand if I cancel I have 7 days to acquire the new extension, or transfer it, if that is even possible.

Sadly, not true. If you cancel an extension of stay, you have until 11:59PM THE SAME DAY to leave Thailand (or potentially get another extension of stay), otherwise you'll be on overstay.

I'm curious, is this the same type of school? For example, are you going from one informal training school to another, OR are you going from an informal training school to a university?
@Ellie ******
, is it possible to cancel an extension of stay based on studying in advance to give the schools more time to process paperwork?
Ellie *******
Should be able to cancel the current extension beforehand with the letter from the school saying you are stopping study as of date ##/## (future date). You need to check with CM immigration office to make sure they accept pre-application for cancelation of extension based on studying the Thai language, and if so, how many days in advance they would accept pre-cancellation.
