Hi, I am currently in Chiang Mai and I have an education visa from Bangkok that I would need to extend before September 8th. However, as it's not possible to travel to Bangkok and my course is online, can I extend it in Chiang Mai? If not, can I cancel the education visa in Chiang Mai (the school is willing to email the letter) and get a 'covid extension' while I wait to go back to Bangkok. If I can't 'cancel' the ED visa, can I do a covid extension and then go to CW when I return to BKK in a few weeks? Thank you very much.

Answer summary

The user is currently in Chiang Mai with an education visa issued in Bangkok and needs to extend it before September 8th. They inquired about the possibility of extending the visa in Chiang Mai due to travel constraints and online coursework. Comments clarify that the education visa cannot be extended outside of Bangkok and advise obtaining a cancellation letter from the school after cessation of studies to apply for a COVID extension. It is also noted that traveling from Chiang Mai to Bangkok is possible.

If my extension expires on September 8th, is going to immigration on that date too late?

Then 8th Sep is the last day you can apply for another extension without going to be on overstay. No, not too late.

BTW... It is possible to travel to Bangkok from Chiang Mai... Many do it every day by day train, taxi and flight to U-Tapao airport near Pattaya and taxi to Bangkok.

Watch the news for possible added flights starting September 1st within Thailand.

Sorry but you will need to return to where you got the Ed Visa...Bangkok.

You cannot extend it in Chiang Mai or any other immigration office other than in Bangkok.

If you end your studies you will need to obtain a letter from the school in Bangkok and take it to Thai immigration in Bangkok to cancel your Ed Visa.

Then you may be able to apply for the COVID extension if you live in Bangkok... Or must return asap to your local immigration office in Chiang Mai and apply for the COVID extension. Be sure to have a TM 30 address registration on file in Chiang Mai.

As you are studying online I suspect that you obtained the Ed Visa from a school in Bangkok...

But if you ask them they will tell you it's not possible to extend the Ed Visa at any other immigration office than Bangkok.

Thanks! I thought so. If flights are cancelled again (likely) for another few weeks, do you know if cancelling the ED visa a bit later will be an issue? Bureaucracy is fun 😉

@David ********

you will be on OVERSTAY... Not a good situation to have happen. You said your Ed visa and or extension ends September 8th.

Are you in your first 90 days of the Ed Visa or on an extension of stay that expires September 8th?
