How can I open a bank account in Thailand with a tourist visa?

If you want to open a bank account it is very straight forward. Got to an immigration office and apply for a certificate of residence, after providing the relevant documents they will then ask you which bank you want to open an account with and they will provide a letter.

Don’t use an agent, don’t listen to everyone saying it’s impossible, it’s easy you just need the correct paperwork.

Banks are very happy to accommodate you when you provide the required documents.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The process of opening a bank account in Thailand as an expat can vary significantly based on individual circumstances and the documents provided. While one user claims it is straightforward with a certificate of residence, numerous comments reveal contradicting experiences where many on tourist visas (DTVs) are denied access even with proper documentation. Discussions highlight that bank policies are inconsistent and often depend on the specific bank and officer involved. Factors like visa type and local immigration office interpretations play a crucial role, leading to varied personal experiences across the community.

For those who are based in Bangkok and wish to increase your success rate, please let me know.

I can help you to open a bank account if you have proper documents.

@Patrapong ****
What is the "Proper Document"?
Klaus *********
@Greg *******
The „proper document“ is 💰😀
Patrapong *****
@Klaus ********
You can try bringing only money to any bank. Then, let’s see if they agree to open an account for you.
Klaus *********
@Patrapong ****
That’s not what I meant 😀😀
Patrapong *****
@Klaus ********
What did you mean by that then?
Klaus *********
@Patrapong ****
The money to pay the agent. Or are you doing it for free?
Patrapong *****
@Klaus ********
I never say I do it for free. Again, if you have only the money paying to the agent, you won’t get the bank account if you don’t have the ‘proper documents’ that an agent like me can’t provide.

So, you can’t say that the proper document is the money because you need both the money and the proper documents. These are two separate things, not one single thing.

@Patrapong ****
Omg you don’t get the joke! 🙄😀

you are exactly the type of person I made the post about 🤣

@Greg *******
- Passport

- DTV visa

- Employment contract

- National ID card from home country or Thai Driving license

- Rental contract

- house registration

And a Thai agent/translator if you don’t speak Thai properly or the bank staff don’t speak properly English.

I bet you wish you had not bothered potsing now lol 5555 Should just name the bank and branch (I know you mentioned previously) together with documents you provided and leave it at that. Then people can try their luck if they so wish but no guarantees. Just be happy you got an account at probably the best local bank. :-)

had summarized this very well. My personal experiences of 20+ years suggest to me that what happens in any bank or immigration office across varies greatly, depending on location and even the infividual official employee you encounter. The early days of the DTV visa program opened the floodgates , now , coupled with an effort to stop money laundering and curtail digital scammers ,both immigration and banks are reacting.

@Ron *****
I agree and was surprised how easy it was to open after hearing you needed to pay an agent, etc and the money laundering issues occurring.

Just fed up reading how it can’t be done by keyboard warriors (like most commenting on this thread) who have never tried and just jump on the bandwagon.

It could not have been easier for me with no questions asked by 3 different people / counters at IO and 2 different bank tellers at Krungsri bank.
Tod *********
@Adrian *******
totally the exception rather than the rule, you should thank your lucky stars it was that easy. As I said there are many MANY posts of people on DTV's being turned down by bank after bank

Who knows why it worked for you?

Your broad brushing that it will be easy for everyone shows you're not really dialed in to how it is in real life for quite a few people 😕

Glad it worked for you, (y)

@Tod ********
I understand that now, from this thread (ha).

The constant ‘it’s impossible’, ‘can’t be done on a DTV’, ‘you need to pay an agent’ bothered me as not strictly true either.

I could have worded it better, live and learn eh 🙏
Ron ******
@Adrian *******
and very lucky for you. At Kbank last year I had three different tellers and managers tell me to bring three different sets of documents. Finally, came in with my wife, all pages of marriage license, and new and old passport and sat in the chair until the bank manager finally signed off. The clerk told me the real back story afterwards, which I can't post on here...

just because it worked for 1 person in 1 bank branch doesn't mean it will work for anyone anywhere.

he was talking about you. And FYI, I tried 4 different banks and all denied me. I'm not just commenting for commenting.
Julien *********
@Adrian *******
great for you. you're probably the only one on this group then when almost every other people has been denied from all banks.

1st thing that the bank asks is a work permit. And as a DTV owners, we don't have a work permit.

@Julien ********
I was able to open a bank account the same way 🤷‍♀️

The bank didn’t ask me any questions, neither did IO. I wonder if everyone else actually tried this route or just walked into the bank without any paperwork? I failed at 4 banks until a kind bank teller sat with me for a couple of mins and explained that I needed a cert of residence, from that point onwards it was very straight forward.
Lee ***********
I went to the immigration office and asked all questions on a DTV, no can't have a residence certificate, no cannot register at the house and the bank said no. Its a tourist visa and for that reason No, have to change visas. Now I know some have posted they have and I know with a property contact things can change. As explained everywhere is slightly different with interpretation of regulations and rules, but that's true about everything and in most places, you just may get lucky!

@Lee **********
guess I did as the IO was very helpful to met, I met the requirements and the letter was ready 2 hours after I submitted copies of passport, lease, etc
Henrik *****
Banks no longer takes any notice of the residence certificat, after some Immigration Offices started handing them out prior to the 3 month required to be regarded as a resident, and no matter what visa scheme the tourist is on.

No Banks check by themselves that the applicant has stayed at a permanent adress for several months on a long lease

have a steady income every month, that is easy tracabel,

being on a genuin long term visa, not visa excempt, tourist and DTV ( which is tourist ).

Having a respectful approach to negotiate with the bank,

Put in a substansial amout on the account, which you can prove the origin of.

worked for me 3 weeks ago, zero questions by either IO or Krungsri bank, don’t have to pay any insurance either

@Adrian *******
You just got lucky with a branch that was willing to work with you. There actually is no consistency in rules between branches of same bank, never mind between different banks.

That you don't know this basic fact kind of makes you look rather ignorant, and your condescending tone make you look even worse

Reason your 'advise' is kind of useless to everyone is you never named branch , if you had might have at least been useful to some people in that area

I’d say it’s mostly luck if you manage to open one with those documents. Many people have tried even with a residence certificate and still couldn’t do it.

incorrect information. even with a COR in your pocket you will not be able to open an account at 99,x% of banks… no matter what documents you present, they usually decline you because of the dtv. even if you present a bunch of other documents and go with a thai. it doesn’t matter.

@Dany *******
guess I was lucky getting asked zero questions when I opened mine 🤷‍♂️

It's common for people to have an individual experience at immigration/ embassy/ bank and then assume that is the way things are universally ... but infact requirements are different from day to day, office to office and even individual staff will create different criteria.

Amazing Thailand!
Lady **********
Even for Thai people nowaday not easy like this above information

The bank dont mind about your certificate of residence they mind on your visa holding ,and not all long term visa are allow to open bank acc as well
Adrian ********

@Lady *********
I don’t remember them asking for a visa as the IO provided me a letter addressed to the bank - your point could be true elsewhere though. I opened mine with Keungsri in Pattaya
Lady **********
@Adrian *******
Then you are lucky.
Chris *******
It is easy if you have the appropriate VISA.

it is not if you don't.

Dunno where you got that mis-information 😮 🙁

BUT

More than a few banks are turning people down left & right trying to open accounts on free entry stamps, tourist visas AND on DTV's (which are just glorified tourist visas) even IF they have a certificate of residence from the immigration office

Plus (at least in Bangkok) when you get a certificate of residence they don't make it out to a specific bank. It's just a boiler plate form that says your name, passport number and that you live at xxx address.

Now granted there are over 80 immigration offices so some might do it different BUT there are hundreds of posts on the inter-web related to thailand about people on DTV's who can't get a bank account open at all, and they've tried a LOT of branches

How about stating where you are in thailand, what immigration office issued you a "personalized" certificate of residence and what bank and branch you were able to "easily open an account" at?

I opened an account with Krungsri in Pattaya 3 weeks ago. Guess I was lucky with both IO and the bank asking me zero questions - just my experience. 🤷‍♂️
Anna *********
@Adrian *******
So perhaps edit your chat to share your experience not tell people how it is done cos for most people this does not work
Adrian ********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Anna ********
Why? Seems like others have similar experience to me.

Most commenting have never attempted this just want to dig others out, they have just read it elsewhere.
Anna *********
@Adrian *******
Because it is the exception (experience0 not the norm and rather than telling people how to do something that 99% of the time doesn't work it is more helpful to couch your experience it terms of just that Your experience!
Adrian ********

@Anna ********
I do agree with you however the majority of people who have given me grief have not even attempted it.

I bet if more tried the same method there would be a lot more success stories.
Anna *********
@Adrian *******
from posts in visa groups at the moment there wouldn’t even be 1% with success stories and what’s worse is even at the same bank and branch one person will succeed and the next will not
Tod *********
@Adrian *******
i think you are mistaken and even a brief search of this group would turn up post after post of people saying they tried several banks and were told no that they couldn't open an account

If I had to guess I'd say it was because you're in Pattaya (which is where ALL the agents advertise they can open bank accounts for people)

I think the bar is set a lot lower down there than in other areas 😛

What I'm not gonna do is get in a pissing match with you about it

Congrats on getting your account open,

REMEMBER PEOPLE: Your mileage may vary 😛

In Bangkok it's just a blank form doesn't even say WHY you're getting it, just that this person, this passport lives at this address
